Governor General Officiates at National Commonwealth Points of Light Investiture Ceremony
In a brief ceremony held at the Government House, Governor General His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams presented Ms. Refica Attwood with a framed certificate signed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to formally recognize her achievement as the 226th Commonwealth Points of Light Awardee.
Ms. Atwood was announced as in recognition of her work in transforming the 1680 acres one of Antigua and Barbuda’s last remaining primary forest into the Walling’s Nature Reserve.
Also in attendance at the ceremony was the Resident British Commissioner, Ms. Lindsy Thompson, who congratulated Ms. Attwood on behalf of the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office and the British High Commission and shared that Ms. Attwood’s work was very inspirational and was truly deserving of recognition.
The Commonwealth Points of Light Awards, part of the legacy of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in London 2018, is yet another vehicle through which the Head of the Commonwealth, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth expresses thanks to inspirational volunteers across the 54 Commonwealth nations for the difference they are making in their communities and beyond.
It is hoped that the inspirational acts of volunteering across the Commonwealth including Antigua and Barbuda will help inspire others to make their own contribution to tackling some of the greatest social challenges of our time.
Ms. Attwood expressed her delight in receiving the award and encouraged others to do their part in protecting our local environment.
