Anthony Smith Resigns from United Progressive Party, Citing Misaligned Values and Leadership Failures
Hon. Anthony Smith, the Parliamentary Representative for All Saint’s West, has formally announced his resignation from the United Progressive Party (UPP), effective immediately.
In a letter addressed to Shawn Nicholas, the General Secretary of the UPP, Smith cited a significant misalignment of values and ongoing conflicts with the party’s leadership as the primary reasons for his departure.

Smith’s resignation letter reveals his deep frustration and disillusionment with the party’s direction and decisions. He emphasized that his core values—transparency, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to the public good—clashed with the actions and policies of the UPP leadership.
Despite attempts to address these issues internally, Smith concluded that remaining with the party compromised his ability to serve his constituents and uphold ethical standards.
The letter detailed Smith’s experience of feeling increasingly marginalized and attacked by the party’s leadership, especially following his support for Hon. Richard Lewis in the leadership contest.
He described facing insults, lies, and threats of expulsion, which led him to feel undervalued within the party.
Smith also expressed concern over the party’s internal dynamics, noting that threats of dwindling support and suggestions that only top leaders would retain their positions were demoralizing. This, he argued, illustrated a leadership that had lost its way and no longer valued its members.

Reflecting on his decision, Smith stated that his commitment to serving the people of All Saints West remains unwavering. He believes that as an Independent Member of the House of Representatives, he will be better positioned to advocate for policies that align with the needs and aspirations of his constituents. Smith highlighted the importance of politics being centered on public interest rather than self-interest, a principle he feels the UPP has strayed from.

In his closing remarks, Smith thanked the UPP for the opportunities and support he received during his tenure. He reaffirmed his commitment to working collaboratively with all House members to promote national well-being and achieve shared goals.

Wonderful move my son. The upp is a party of hate and jealousy. They have demonstrated over the decades of the unfair tactics in their primaries, the lies and propaganda they spread daily corrupting the minds of the youth. I would encourage Mr smith to join the ranks of the Ablp. Upp doesn’t have no plan for this country , they have no regional appeal much less international appeal.
I have seen Gisel Isaac destroy the UPP alone, and we fail to tell her so. Gisel Isaac, you need to excuse, you know to yourself that you no longer have any use to the party. We knew this was coming, even before he won his seat. The Chairman and the Attorney one will be the demise of the UPP. Hon. RL knows that he’s not liked by the Central Executive but he’s chiding the government at all cost to gain relevance.

The “filthy lucre”, seems to have gotten another one. This is sad for Smith because he has committed political suicide. I see all the nonsense from the labourites but Smith is an MP! Where is the loyalty to those who put you there sir? And, if your argument is Integrity, Transparency etc, you are heading to a place where such things do not exist. In other words, “you have sold your political soul” young man and in the short term you might not see it but you will in the end.
And to those that want to go, please hurry so that UPP can properly rebuild. It is strange that ALP will seemingly pay anything to get a hold of members of a party of ‘dunces’.
Sad to see these merchant political moves as merchant politicians, the upp leadership race was driven and engineered by party fanaticism, people who are of party color and not ideology, I thought it would have paved the way for Mr Pringle to recognize that he tentatively held the leadership status because of been the only elected member albeit he don’t have the political experience which can only come from time and ideology of purpose for people and country, the old blue don’t care supporters that voted at that leadership race were sad, people that could hardly move was negotiating by way of vote a countries future, while the young people are busy on the block smoking. I have read the reasons that Anthony Smith sited as reasons and find them childish and trivial. When men and women are involved in organizations, we are dealing with the human mind,the most desperately wicked and evil entity, so there will be conflicts. Deflecting and joining the enemy is the solution? The two thousand voters put him there as a UPP representative now they’re supposed to accept him as an ALP representative? The only reason Anthony Smith is not classified as an ALP member is because the laws would not allow him,but being given a ministry is proof of the deflection. At what cost man,at what cost? Is anything worth a man’s integrity? This is betrayal Anthony Smith. Plane and simple. You settled for the filthy lucre,the thirty pieces of silver and these things come with a cost. A sad day in Antigua indeed.
Dave Ray, you don’t have defectors because ABLP/ALP has one rule of dominance and that is to keep the native Antiguan in poverty so that they can be easily bribed as necessary. Meanwhile you all hand out opportunities to the foreigners because you know they’ll give back a percentage which you’ll then use to bribe the poor. If one of these foreigners leave then the cycle continues with another one.
This young man (allegedly) has been disloyal and a liar since his childhood, he would’ve never been accepted into the UPP fold because his character preceded him and its not a good one. He is most suitable for ABLP because all of you in that party questionable.
Now on another note we all know Giselle Isaac will be the demise of UPP, because she has more balls than the men. She would step down and allow someone else to breathe new life into the position and make the necessary changes required for advancement.
