Rat Droppings and Expired Food Found in Surprise Health Inspection at Local Supermarket

A supermarket on Lower All Saints Road has come under scrutiny after health inspectors discovered rat droppings, the stench of urine, and a large stockpile of expired food items during a surprise visit by the Central Board of Health (CBH).

According to Chief Health Inspector Sharon Martin, the inspection revealed a serious rodent and cockroach infestation, with expired goods deliberately hidden behind items with current dates.

The expired items were seized and taken to the Cooks Sanitary Landfill for destruction. Martin said the visit was part of ongoing unannounced inspections across the island, meant to catch businesses operating under their usual conditions. However, sources suggested that the operation may have been prompted by a tip-off.

“It is against the law to offer for sale anything unwholesome for public use,” Martin stated, warning that repeat violations could result in prosecution or closure of the business.

The supermarket, which has not been named, had reportedly been selling expired food to unsuspecting customers. Martin urged the public to carefully check labels when shopping and advised supermarkets to remove expired stock to avoid endangering public health.

  1. Jesus Christ. Money hungry people putting the public life at risk to make an extra buck. So irresponsible

  2. Rat 🐀 feces 💩 and urine at a place that sells food is disgusting🤮. Name and shame this supermarket so their customers know to shop somewhere else! If they don’t receive a big fine, they will do it again so it’s important for their disrespected customers to know and take their business elsewhere.

  3. I understand your concern there but it most likely will not be posted for respect toward the business. Hopefully it is shut down temporarily or altogether.

  4. Name and Shame the business. Customers need to know so they can get tested

  5. No matter how big they are check them often, they do not care one damn about the general public, all they care about is the mighty dollar, every last one of them

  6. So if someone dies from consuming rat infested products, will CHB take responsibility for failing to properly alert the public?

  7. But I have not heard whether or not the supermarket was closed for business until they were in good standing with CBH. I mean I am very please to see that CBH is doing their job, but we need more actions from them. Too many street vendors are not handling food the way they should. And they are plying their trade at night. Perhaps they figure the CBH is not working at night hours.

  8. I also learned that some weeks ago lots of people came down with Fish Poisoning after having attended a private wedding function. I don’t know who the caterer was but I hope CBH has done an investigation in this. Fish poison is a very serious health concern and could lead to death for some people with a compromise health system. I have not heard of any death related to this case but some people I understand had it very bad according to a doctor I spoke to. I wonder if SLBMC should and would have reported all these cases to CBH.

  9. The supermarket must be named and shamed, especially if it’s is still trading. Rats urine can spread Leptospirosis that can then go on cause jaundice and possible kidney failure.

The general public must know the name of this supermarket and what measures have made to safeguard shoppers … or close it done until it gets a clean bill of health and welfare.

  10. With all the talk and Ai Conferences at UWI; Maybe Gaston, Chet, Darryl and the Vice Chancellor at UWI Five Islands can apply Ai to address this issue.

  11. Somebody must know so it won’t remain a secret for long. This is Antigua we love a melee

  12. Rat poop AND roaches AND expired food?! In a supermarket?! Unacceptable. Disgusting. Shut them down.

  13. Really Shelby. The authorities job should not be taken from them. This is something about our health which is very informative.
Thank U Antigua News for alerting us about the thi gs that business places do cuz sometimes we really look to see if goods are expired or not. This will now bring awareness when heading to the supermarket.

  14. we’re still on this? there are many others who need inspection so I hope they will continue.

Rather than regurgitate this story a business was just robbed why not interview the owner , find out how he was affected, how did business go today , what measures would they like to see put in place to curb the increase in robberies that we are seeing etc.

You can tell when it’s a slow news day over here.

  15. Lol. Why don’t you go ask the owner how was business today since you would like to know.

  16. many people would still patronize. Cause some of yunno like the rats and roaches same way.

    Inspect the inspectors

  17. Pls name the supermarket. How many supermarket is on lower All.Saintz Road.Miss .Martin for heaven sake.Rat droppings and roaches and supermarket name is kept secret. We to love to hide up things and names in this country. This is hazardous health issues.Rat is deadly oh my lawd.Let people know. who are the culprits Our health is at great risk.

  18. It’s not a matter of ” people could get sick”, people have already gotten sick, and that’s why someone went and reported it.

But here is the question. Who are being protected in Antigua, the business or the general public?

That answer will tell everyone of you who’s lives really matter.

It’s not about shaming the business, it’s about public safety, and saving lives. To hell with the business and its name, shut it down until it gets it’s act together.

A slap on the list is not sufficient.

  19. I think Shelly has a point and it would have made for a good news story.

Too many small businesses have suffered at the hands of these ruthless thugs and they would have to double up to make back lost revenue. (stolen)

  20. Why all this moral outrage? Rodents live with us and anywhere there is food Rodents will be found, they feast on our fruits in our back yard gardens and leave their droppings anywhere they pass. So instead of pointing fingers after reading this article, we should all commit to regularly inspecting our homes for these pest and employ proper garbage management.
