Yesterday, members of the opposition conducted what can only be described as a ‘beach access check,’ visiting several beaches in St. Phillip’s North Constituency including those near hotels and frequented by tourists to film confrontational style content. While public access to beaches is a right protected by law, deliberately staging such stunts in tourist hotspots sends the wrong message to the international community.
Antigua and Barbuda depends on tourism as its lifeblood. No one, regardless of political affiliation, should risk the country’s image or the visitor experience just to make a point. There are appropriate and constructive channels to address public concerns. Turning peaceful tourist zones into political battlegrounds not only undermines our industry but also harms the hardworking locals who rely on tourism to support their families.
Political leaders should act with responsibility, patriotism, and respect for the people of Antigua and Barbuda and protect our national interest first. #CountryOverPolitics#CountryFirst

Make sure there is public access and there can’t be any stunt.
While I agree with your narrative, I feel that the oppossition is right in this matter. Do your job and ensure that nationals have all access granted under the law and while you’re at it stop building hotel properties on the beach.
Not often do slaves speak……
When they speak we listen to hear if their rantings make sense……..
It doesn’t this time………
I thought Baltimore would have condemned those who sell beach from lands and put gates across the public accesses……..
I thought he would call on his government to ask that all blocked accesses be freed…….
I thought he would join those wanting free unimpeded access to the beaches and make the call that never should any gate or chain be placed across the access road…….
So because hotels and or private homes provide some employmenr we should sell our souls???????
I am yet to see the confrontation that Baltimore speaks about……….
Get it right Baltimore…….
I guess you presence has to be heard……..
You are feeling left out……….
Indigenous Antiguans should sell their dignity and birthright for a few dollars? Is this fool mad? That’s a hard hell no. We don’t have any private beaches in this country. Bruck down All de barriers. Who don’t like it can lump it.
Locals and the likes should have easy access to the beaches
I couldn’t agree more. Many of the picketers didn’t even know that Laurey Bay existed before joining the staged action. They will never return there for a swim, that’s if they can swim.
What’s ironic is that if their party was not in opposition, they would not have staged this picket.
Dian Bay in the same area is owned by local Antiguan family, and they don’t have access to that beach. I’m quite certain they didn’t approach that property. I have been there and know that the public is not allowed.
The Alfa Nero is no longer on their tongues. So, they’re trying to find another scapegoat. Good luck.
As a antiguan citizen we should have access to the beach at all times..
All times not sometimes but all times
I tried to go to valley church beach and
There was a large gate blocking the entrance to the beach!
A large gate,
I have pictures on my phone .
The beach belongs to us,
We should be able to go to the beach anytime we want.
Stop giving away our beach to these foreign
Investors.
STOP.
L
@Sandra clarke You seems ignorant about Valley Church. That Big Gates was build, owned and operated by ANTIGUAN BLACK MAN. He is the One who can decide when and to who open it..So No foreigner is involved in that gate..Is a Local man.
@ AA
Why is the gate blocking the entrance to the beach?
I don’t care if they are black white or purple
Why is the entrance blocked?
NF can also mean Not Friendly.
That being said, Antiguans and Barbudans are dumb NF!
@Sandra Clarke because that gate is on private land. That is not the original access to Valley church beach.
What wrong message are they sending? These people seem not to understand what’s happening throughout Africa with land ownership and beach access. I hear some frivolous talk about some people never knew the place existed and after that day they will not be returning because they probably can’t swim and some more crap. Does any of that rambling really matter? If we should have access to the beaches, it shouldn’t be an issue if anyone just wants to show up for the sake of doing just that. Why not condemn the government for selling our lands to these interlopers and stop searching for trivia to impress your masters. They have sold all those lands at Devil’s Bridge, which is incidentally a national park so we are locked in from both sides of the road. Just recently, Barrett was constructing a bar directly on the beach at Long Bay; someone alerted the Prime Minister and he said that he was going to investigate and if the allegation was true, he was going to let the authorities issue a stop-order. What is the status of that business presently? The report was probably false. Slavery, as we know it, lasted for over three centuries because some people thought that they were/inferior while others were looking acceptance. You people can decide your category.
The legal term, “Free Access to the Beach” has been interpreted very loosely. It certainly doesn’t mean that you can drive your car through my property. And it certainly doesn’t mean at any time of the day you can pass through my land. Especially if I live on the land. I have the right to protect my property. The owner of the Land at Valley Church has a chain and lets you in from 8:00AM through 5:00PM. The law doesn’t state how wide the path of the access must be, and if it needs to be paved. Antiguans cannot have it both ways. You want beach access and you want to have the right to trespass through peoples property. How can one have a property and provide security to his guests and at the same time allow any Tom, Dick or Harry access through its property. Access through anyones property must be controlled. And the sad thing is we claim to have 365 beaches, yet we always want to go to those beaches that have a property of a hotel or so on it. We deliberately seeking the confrontation. And for what reason. Once I used to love going to secluded beaches. But these days with the rise in crime I only go where there is a crowd. When you try to go the beach at Dickenson Bay you cannot cross through Siboney or Salt Plage. You have to take either the parking lot by Anna’s, Antigua Village, or the path between Sandals and Royalton Chic. If not you have to go through Marina Bay and Buccaneer. You just cannot cross where ever you want.
Please somebody check out now, what is happening to the first beach at Hawksbill someone is systematically erecting posts and chaining off the public car park piece by piece. Furthermore the public can no longer manuovre safely in the carpark area any longer as over half the carpark is not longer accessible for safe turning, to to various obstructions, there is only parking for 6-7 vehicles and all other vehicles park in the narrow lane making it very hazardous to turn. There was nowhere to park this Holiday cars were parked all up the narrow road leading to Hawksbill security gate.
@Rovi,
You’re an interloper as well. You migrated here and acquired land as your private property. The difference between those interlopers and you is that they provide a source of income for the locals whilst in their quest to be successful entrepreneurs on our island. They contribute while you offer words of advice on the environment.
I, for sure don’t have to search for trivia to impress any master. I’m independently self sustained.
Please, Mr. MD, you can impress Dave Lester Payne and the others who will entertain you.
I can never fathom how someone who halls from a quasi – developped country, would settle in a small island
developing state, fighting for the issues are synonymous with our size and geographic location.
Half of these people who are picketing, have no ambition. Instead of coming together to form companies with an attorney in the midst to advise them as to the strategy to building generational wealth, they’re making themselves a nuisance by their leaders who are only using them for political expediency or mileage.
WELL SAID!
If something illegal is been done, why are the authorities’ waiting on a directive from the PM? If someone is constructing a bar on a beach illegally why call the PM? Why not call the DCA? While politicians passed laws in Parliament they are not responsible for enforcing the law. I have heard of situation where a minister sexually assaulted a young lady and the police waiting on permission from the PM before taking action….AH WAH KIND AH PAPPY SHOW country this YAH. Law enforcement agencies in this country need to get up off their asses, get some balls and do their work according to the law and behaving like puppets.
HOW IS IT HE HAS NOT SPOKEN ANYTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT THE ABLP? ARE THEY PERFECT?
WOW
@ less we forget
You said that it was privatel property and that the gate is opened from 8 am – 5 pm
But I went to valley church beach we got there at 1pm,
And the gate was closed. Locked.
What made it worse we had family visiting for carnival..
We couldn’t get access to the beach.
@Sandra clarke June 11, 2025 At 8:59 am
Yes unfortunately things like that happens. And I will not say that the owner is right. But do you know the history of people going to that beach. It used to be a very popular beach to visit. But like with everything our people are very nasty. When they leave the beach, instead of taking the garbage with them, they left everything there. Baby Pamper with shit in it, kentucky boxes, left over food, bones, you name it. And for the night romance lovers, it was the place to drive with your chick, have sex and throw your condom right there on gthe ground. That is how we treat our beaches and we want to have free access to them. Even Fort James Beach has become a dump. Sorry but I know people have right to access, but on the same hand people have right to peacefull use of their property. This law should be challenced all the way to the Privy Council. It clashes with one’s right to do what he/she want with his/her property.
@ less we forget 11.49 am.
I agree with you about cleaning up after ourselves. I did notice that there was KFC boxes and garbage left unattended,
Ps..I didn’t notice any condoms😆
Seriously though, we need a new campaign to keep the beaches clean after we visit,
And to take your garbage with you when you are leaving.
I hope the tourism minister sees our concern
You take care now!!!
@Sandra clarke Because we jump so easily and be loudy when a Foreigner with light skin purchase something.. BLA BLA BLA..But when a DARK skin local do it…is a Silent and no noise. You just jump first to say: Foreigner Investors without knowing about it.. When you get the real information about that particular Area. Then you are OK. The same thing happening in Valley church, is happening all Over in Antigua. After locals visit the beach…Lot of rubbish is left behind…a lot.. Most of then don’t care, and they claim loudly NOBODY TELL THEM WHAT TO DO IN THEIR COUNTRY. If some foreigner purchase a Land and build something, Ohh this “Rich bla bla bla”, but if a local do it…Silent. Same situation but different actors.
