Antiguan all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall has stepped down as captain of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes ahead of the CG United Super50 Cup in Trinidad.
The 31-year-old, who also leads the Antigua and Barbuda Master Blasters, said the decision followed the conclusion of the recent LICB Mixed Tournament in St. Kitts, where his team finished second.
“I think the team needs somebody else to take up the mantle,” Cornwall said. “I’ll still be playing—I’m just enjoying my cricket and not captaincy.”
He admitted the demands of leadership had affected his form. “For the past couple of years captaining and looking out for other players kind of overshadowed my performance,” he said. “It’s time to just enjoy my cricket again.”
Cornwall said he remains committed to the team and proud of the young players who impressed during the recent tournament.
West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph is expected to assume the Hurricanes’ captaincy when the Super50 Cup begins on November 19.
