Quarry Workers Receive Overtime Payments as Material Production Ramps Up for 2025
The government has addressed outstanding overtime payments for quarry workers as part of its broader efforts to boost material production for critical infrastructure projects in 2025. Housing Minister Maria Browne, speaking during the 2025 Budget Debate, highlighted the measures taken to resolve payment delays and improve staff morale
“Quarry workers are the backbone of our road and construction initiatives,” Minister Browne stated. “We recognized the challenges they faced due to delayed overtime payments, and I’m pleased to report that payments have now commenced, with remaining amounts to be settled soon.”
With these payments underway, quarry operations are set to ramp up significantly, ensuring the production of essential materials for major projects. This includes supplying materials for the Booby Alley housing initiative and the government’s ambitious roadworks program.
Minister Browne also outlined plans to address operational challenges at the quarries, including securing spare parts for equipment and expanding production capacity. “We’ve established an imprest account to purchase and stock critical spare parts, reducing downtime caused by equipment breakdowns,” she explained.
The quarry will also operate extended hours to meet the growing demand for materials. Recent additions, such as a new drill provided by the Department of Environment, will further enhance efficiency and output.
“Heading into 2025, we are fully equipped to support our nation’s infrastructure needs,” Browne said. “The increased production will ensure that projects like road repairs and new housing developments are completed on time and with high-quality materials.”
The minister commended quarry staff for their dedication, particularly during challenging times, and expressed optimism for the year ahead. With improved resources and morale, the government is poised to deliver on its promise of enhanced infrastructure and housing for the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
