Local Pub Owner Fined for Drug Possession
Okive Banton, a local pub owner, was convicted of drug possession after admitting to owning 1.25 pounds of cannabis with intent to sell. Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel fined him $40,000, with a two-year deadline to pay or face an equivalent prison sentence.
Police seized EC $2,160 and US $420 from Banton, which were forfeited to the authorities. The drugs were ordered destroyed.
The case began on January 10 when police searched Straight Pub, owned by Banton, and a nearby property linked to Delroy Basksom.
No illegal items were initially found, but officers later discovered cannabis hidden under Basksom’s house. Banton admitted ownership of the drugs and denied Basksom’s involvement.
Both men were arrested, but only Banton was charged. Lawyer Michael Archibald represented him in court.
