The government has begun its island-wide beautification campaign aimed at removing derelict homes, starting in the capital.

Amenity orders have been issued by the Development Control Authority (DCA), giving property owners 28 days to either upgrade or demolish neglected buildings. Those who fail to act within the deadline risk having their properties demolished by authorities.

Officials are urging owners to contact the DCA to avoid enforcement action.

The initiative, first announced in August, follows growing public concern over abandoned structures that have become eyesores and health hazards.

Under recent legislation, the government can seek court approval to address unsafe properties after notifying owners. If owners do not comply, the state may move to acquire or demolish the buildings.

A special DCA team conducted assessments of affected sites in October.
