Leader of the Opposition and United Progressive Party (UPP) Political Leader, Jamale Pringle, has announced plans to unveil the first 10 candidates and caretakers who will represent the party in the next general election.

The announcement will take place at a public rally in Parham on Thursday, January 2nd, as part of the UPP’s campaign efforts ahead of the St. Peter by-election.

In his New Year’s message, Pringle described the upcoming rally as a significant moment for both the UPP and the nation, emphasizing the need for leadership that prioritizes transparency, accountability, and fairness.

β€œLet us make 2025 the year of positive and progressive change,” Pringle said, as he called on citizens to demand better governance from the Gaston Browne Administration.

The UPP leader criticized the current government for failing to deliver on promises, citing ongoing struggles such as rising supermarket prices, unfulfilled pension increases for senior citizens, and inadequate resources for essential service providers like nurses and police officers.

He also highlighted the plight of former LIAT workers waiting for severance payments and small business owners struggling to receive payments from the Treasury.

Pringle framed the rally and the by-election as opportunities for Antiguans and Barbudans to signal their dissatisfaction with the status quo and chart a new path forward.

β€œThe St. Peter by-election is offering Antigua and Barbuda a chance to change direction early in the New Year,” he stated, expressing confidence in UPP candidate George Wehner’s ability to advocate for the constituency’s needs.

The rally, set to kick off the UPP’s campaign for the St. Peter seat, is expected to showcase the party’s commitment to addressing longstanding issues in neglected constituencies and fostering unity among supporters.

Pringle also promised that the unveiling of candidates would reflect the party’s dedication to serving the people of Antigua and Barbuda with integrity and purpose.

β€œTogether with Brother George Wehner, the Team, and the Party, the constituency of St. Peter will begin to rise,” Pringle declared, inviting all citizens to attend the rally and join the movement for progress and reform.

As the UPP enters the new year, Pringle reiterated the party’s resolve to remain a resilient force for change.

β€œOur setbacks have shown that we are a time-tested, resilient institution. We are a β€˜no retreat, no surrender’ people,” he affirmed.

With the by-election less than two weeks away, the UPP’s rally in Parham marks a critical step in the party’s broader push for governance reform and citizen empowerment.

  4. This is a bit risky, it would have been better to have a press conference followed by a question/answer segment…if the field is.empty which is quite possible, it would make the party look even weaker. sigh
