Pringle accuses PM of ‘double standards’ in handling ministerial misconduct

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle on Monday accused Prime Minister Gaston Browne of applying “double standards” in his response to allegations involving government ministers, contrasting past dismissals with what he described as a softer approach to the ongoing vehicle-procurement controversy.

Speaking during his response to the 2026 national budget, Pringle listed several instances in which Browne removed ministers from office, arguing that the prime minister’s actions in those cases differed sharply from the tone taken regarding the current matter.

Pringle said former Education Minister Michael Browne was removed from his post in 2020 after being charged by police, even though he was later found not guilty.

He also pointed to the dismissal of former minister Dean Jonas, saying Browne had fired him for what the prime minister described at the time as “toxic relationships” with staff.

Pringle further noted the removal of Asot Michael in 2018, telling the House that the former minister was dismissed after he was questioned by British investigators, despite not being charged.

Pringle contrasted those examples with what he said was a noticeably different stance taken toward the recently exposed vehicle-procurement issue.

He argued that the prime minister’s public comments suggest a reluctance to impose consequences when “the matter involves someone close to home.”

According to Pringle, the responses outlined in the budget debate raise questions about consistency, accountability and whether the same standards apply across the government.

He said the public should not be expected to accept varying levels of action depending on who is involved.

Pringle made the allegation as part of broader criticism of the government’s handling of procurement and oversight.

He has called for an independent investigation into the vehicle matter, saying the prime minister’s internal review is insufficient.

DOES. NOT, MAKE. YOU. INTELLIGENT Mr. Pringle

  2. It is sad that after so many years Pringle still cannot debate a budget without constantly reading from his notes. And ABS camera was constantly close up on him showing he was reading. I guess you only do that because someone else has written it and you cannot memorize it all. And then he doesn’t even know the difference between a Primary Budget Surplus and Cashflow Surplus. I have tried to explain it many time before. The government doesn’t have an economic problem. It has a financial problem. That is why it constantly needs to finance its spending. Suppose you need to buy a vehicle in January but you expect your revenue for the vehicle to come in December. So you borrow the money in January and repay it in December. Some people when they are in financial difficulties they ask their employer for an advance. This ids done to finance their spendings. I take a loan or a mortgage in order to be able to purchase things that I cannot afford at that time. But if I safe for lets say ten years I would be able to. But I need it now. So when Pringle wants to reason why the government is borrowing, it shows that he is not well educated in finance. And keep mixing up Economics with Finance. The government has grown the economy, but at the same time the Treasury is empty. They cannot wait till there is enough money in the Treasury to do the things they need to do. But money will be coming in daily, weekly and monthly. And that will enable them to service their loans. Banks will have no problem borrowing them the money against future income. Just like when we needed to build a new airport, we borrowed the money and he lender placed a lien against the revenues from the airport in order to service the loan. If Pringle and others in the UPP don’t educate themselves on these basic economic principles they will always look and sound stupid. My friend Petra should take the time to educate them on some of the radio shows. And what is more sad, their supporters don’t know better either and follow them blindly.
