Prime Minister Gaston Browne says he plans to begin studies for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in January.
Speaking on his weekly radio program Saturday, Browne said he intends to contact the University of the West Indies (UWI) on Monday to formalize his application.
While he did not specify his field of study, Browne described the decision as part of his personal commitment to lifelong learning and academic excellence.
Browne, who already holds a master’s degree, has long promoted higher education among his colleagues and the public. He has frequently urged parliamentarians and supporters of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party to take advantage of opportunities for further education, particularly through the UWI Five Islands Campus.
Several parliamentarians are currently enrolled at the campus, including Senator Lamin Newton and Colin O’Neal. Opposition MP Kelvin “Shugy” Simon is also pursuing his degree there.

Knowledge is power
PM where you finding time? When you habe a whole country of uncivilized people to run?…I love your ambitions. I also wish you the best. You can do it.
If i could i would aswell….all the best PM.
To be fair to the Prime Minister, in recent times, the Most Honourable Kelvin Shugy Simon is also pursuing further education.
I’m all for our politicians to be better qualified in their field of office/work. It makes a lot of sense. I cannot understand how only politicians – in the main – can jump from pillar to post and pillar again, where one minute they are in charge of say the environment, and then say running the finances of the country. Tarl!
This rarely happens in any other occupational fields.
So Prime Minister, it’s good to know that you are following Shugy’s lead. You know it makes sense. 👍🏾
