Prime Minister Gaston Browne Criticizes MP Algernon “Serpent” Watts for Discouraging Youth Attendance at Meeting

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has expressed concerns over statements made by Member of Parliament Algernon “Serpent” Watts, which he believes discouraged youth participation in a recent government meeting. The Prime Minister shared his disappointment, stating that Watts’ comments on his radio program likely influenced a significant number of young people to stay away from the event.

During a recent meeting with approximately 30 young attendees, Prime Minister Browne learned that many other youths had refrained from attending. According to Browne, this was due to remarks made by Watts the night before, warning them that the government might be planning to detain them. Browne mentioned that this claim was echoed by King Sagay, who was present at the meeting.

“He [Watts] was on his program the night before, telling them not to show up because we have a lot of buses to round them up to take them to jail,” Browne stated. “We heard that as a matter of fact, we heard that that was expressed by King Sagay when he joined us here yesterday.”

The Prime Minister suggested that, had Watts not made such claims, more youths would have attended the meeting. “They weren’t planning to come because, as far as they’re concerned, they heard that we have buses down there to lock them up,” Browne said, reflecting on the potential impact of Watts’ statements.

Browne described the situation as “serious,” emphasizing that these actions hinder the government’s efforts to engage with young people and address their concerns. He further criticized the imagery of fear that Watts had created among the youth, particularly the idea that attending a government meeting could result in arrest.

The Prime Minister concluded by urging the importance of unity and open dialogue, particularly when addressing the youth of the nation. He reiterated that the government’s intention was to foster communication and cooperation with the younger generation, not to intimidate them.
