Gaston Browne Condemns Political Opportunism Amid National Tragedy
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has criticized opposition figures for allegedly using the tragic murder of a nine-year-old Chantel Crump to advance political agendas.
Speaking on his weekly Browne and Browne Show, Browne condemned what he described as political opportunism, asserting that some individuals and groups were seeking to exploit the national tragedy rather than focusing on justice and community healing.
The Prime Minister emphasized that his administration had been actively engaged in efforts to apprehend the suspects and ensure justice for the victim. He disclosed that he had been in constant contact with law enforcement authorities since Wednesday afternoon, working closely with the Police Commissioner to coordinate resources and investigative strategies.
“I understand the distress and pain that people are feeling, but there are some who are using this situation to push political narratives and create unnecessary division,” Browne stated. “Instead of using this moment to unite and support the family of the victim, there are political elements who see this as an opportunity for self-promotion.”
Browne also rebuked the notion that his government was indifferent to the crisis, revealing that he had personally reached out to the grieving family and offered government assistance for funeral expenses. He argued that while some were engaged in protest and rhetoric, his administration had been working behind the scenes to address crime and improve security measures.
“There are those who want to claim that we do not care, but the fact is that we were actively working through the night on this case while others were asleep,” he said. “The government remains committed to ensuring that justice is served, and we will not be distracted by those who seek to politicize this tragedy.”
The Prime Minister further highlighted the need for a collective approach to addressing crime, calling on the public to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid spreading misinformation. He reiterated his government’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring that such acts of violence do not go unpunished.
In Antigua there is heightened public emotions following the shocking crime, with calls for stronger security measures and harsher penalties for violent offenders. As investigations continue, the government maintains that it will take all necessary steps to restore public confidence and safety.

Prime Minister this is not the time for “political point scoring” so soon after the death of this young girl and grieving relatives. How terrible for them!
Many Antiguans highlighted the same said thing after the heinous murder of Asot Michael, when an ABLP candidate was announced for a by-election before Asot Michael was even buried. Callous to the extreme.
In death there must be some sort of decorum and dignity, especially for the bereaved family, friends and associates.
PLEASE DO BETTER PM …
I thought when Dwayne George and Michael Joseph was making statements that was political opportunism!!!
Dwayne George should take the opportunity to explain himself using his credentials to expedite the drugs out of post office.
You are LATE and found wanting
So many outcries. Ppl marchd on Thursday not knowing then that Friday midnight, the country would be made to face a horrible truth
Did you work behind the scenes to find Passo?
Did you engage the nation when a baby was left abandoned on Jonas rd? A baby and 8yr old are precious. So many even more innocent have been suffering. Gender Affairs don’t have an office and victims are knocked all bout de place.
Instead Atlee and all the newbee squares were outta town furthering their retirement agenda
All I have to say to you, Mr. Brown is why, why are you not leading this country properly? Why are they so many people that feel that they own things that belongs to all of the people in Antigua, I live in the Powells area, and I was confronted by some people that play cricket on field, they told me that the field belongs to the cricketers , I went there with my daughters so they can play on the field, why are we privatizing our fields.. I said to the lady we have nowhere to go plus where else can my children play? I said people are dying. Look at child that got kidnapped and died. She replied what that have to do with me? And she proceeded to lock the gate while I was inside, I called Michael Freeland, and I messaged Darel Matthew, who told me that the fields are not and should not be locked.. Now tell me is that right? I drove pass today sbd the gate is still locked .. And those are the same people that condemn the murderer of little girl and I said to her you are the same because you’re heartless you’re only thinking about yourself..

What is the motive for the murder of Chantel?
People need to know why did she do it?
This man got to be stupid.
How do you know the information that the public is putting out on social media is misinformation Gatson, how, unless that information is verified to be so?
So if you have credible information about the missing and unsolved cases all over Antigua, well bring it forth and tell the people. That’s what people are asking for, credible info leading to the capture of these serial killers roaming Antigua.
Until then, just keep quiet if you have nothing to say as a leader, because the people who’s families are getting murdered and vanishing, certainly have the right to their inquest.
Not everyone that ask questions are oppositions Gatson, because I’m very certain that many that even voted for you want answers as well.
Opposition my backside..such a damn over used word these days..we are all in search of justice here, UPP or ALBP, but all you know as a leader is how to serve/help those that give you money and voted for you.
That’s all he does; he never misses an opportunity at a crisis. I wonder if he’s privy to what happened, because he always seems to be in the know. He went to the U.S. and castigated Nigel Christian like he knew some things and also informed us of Chuksi’s apparent whereabouts, when the public wasn’t even aware that he was missing. Hope he’s going to talk when the time comes.
