Prime Minister Gaston Browne has underscored the critical role of education and training in preparing leaders to navigate the complexities of modern governance.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne emphasized that higher education equips individuals with the skills and discipline necessary for effective leadership, particularly in a globalized and interconnected world.

Reflecting on his administration’s emphasis on professional development, Browne said, “Education is the passport to the future, and the future belongs to those who prepare themselves today.”

Citing figures like Malcolm X, he reiterated the importance of continuous self-improvement, not only for political leaders but for citizens aspiring to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The Prime Minister criticized the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) for what he described as a lack of focus on cultivating leaders with the necessary training and expertise.

Browne contrasted his administration’s push for educational opportunities, such as the Second Chance Program, with what he characterized as the UPP’s failure to promote a culture of self-development within its ranks.

Browne argued that leadership at the highest level demands more than basic qualifications. “You’re saying that they must have the right to jump in front of those people who have spent years earning master’s and doctoral degrees? How do you expect to lead us when you don’t have the discipline to develop yourself?” he questioned, taking aim at what he perceives as the UPP’s tolerance for unqualified leadership.

The Prime Minister also pointed to historical figures in Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape who, despite lacking formal university education, demonstrated exceptional competence and discipline.

However, he stressed that the context has changed, and modern leadership demands greater preparation to meet the challenges of a rapidly evolving world.

“Even individuals like Sir Hugh Marshall and Sir Vere Cornwall Bird were well-read and enlightened beyond their formal education levels, but today’s leaders must be equipped to engage with global counterparts,” Browne explained.

Browne highlighted the success of initiatives such as the Second Chance Program, noting that it has inspired individuals to pursue higher education and professional training. He shared that several people had enrolled in the program following recent discussions, underscoring the demand for accessible education pathways.

The Prime Minister’s comments come amid broader debates about the qualifications and capabilities of political leaders, particularly within the opposition.

While his remarks have drawn criticism from some quarters as elitist, Browne defended his stance, arguing that prioritizing education is essential for national progress.

Whether the opposition will heed this call for self-development remains to be seen, but the debate over the role of education in politics is likely to continue shaping the nation’s discourse.

  2. @ just Research….so tell Pringle et Al and maybe you children to look at all you mentioned…that’s it ok not to pursue a higher Education. There are hidden stories behind those you mentioned that are not shared with the world.

  3. ok@just research, you have not named one high school dropout in todays world that have risen to the post of president or prime minister, travelling the world attending meetings and speaking to world leaders. Those mentioned drop out of universities to persue private enterprises and have suceeded through trials and errors. You cannot succeed through trials and errors in politics.

  4. Hi I am not saying that everyone that aspires in representing their community must have a degree. However it would be good if they do. Do you see where you wrote Bill Gates dropped and your number 2 dropped out of “ HARVARD.
However you do have brilliant, successful people , that do not have degrees , that can serve in parliament and spin tops around some of these idiots , greedy self enriching politicians. Especially if they come with honesty and integrity. True wisdom comes from God and one can educate themselves without going to a university.
Again I would encourage everyone that comes into my circle that is capable to go and get a degree, to do so. Even to prevent what Gaston is doing here to these three fellow citizens. Whom I am sure is more than capable of getting a degree.
Do you know Pringle was a school teacher, Pearl a Banker and Serpent an intelligent, street smart man that owns a radio station. Serpent got the most votes in the entire elections. The public also have a taste for street smart people.

  5. Education is important, but you have to choose where to study and how to study wisely. Most of the billionaires mentioned above are still educated even though they did not completed university and a lot of university graduates works for them (cooperate slaves).Education is about making humanity better. Man only knows how fire works in the 20th century, but a cave man knew how to start a fire thousands of years ago.

  6. I realised someone listing successful individuals who discontinued University to pursue millions in a field they were already EDUCATED OF, BY THE VERY SAME UNIVERSITY THEY DISCONTINUED; all to justify incompetence and this is exactly what’s wrong with us as a people. we are quick to attempt to justify our own ignorance. Mark Zuckerberg isn’t doing anything he hasn’t acquired in University no one you mentioned is. It’s one thing to not complete the course… It’s another to have never enrolled to begin with. and for the record Mr Fenty is currently pursuing her Doctorate as well… and as a politician at that, which i believe was the point being made. But yes by all means do justify your own ignorance.
