Prime Minister Addresses Road Infrastructure Challenges in Antigua and Barbuda

During his Independence Day address on November 1, Prime Minister Gaston Browne spoke candidly about the state of the nation’s roads, acknowledging the significant challenges faced in maintaining and improving the infrastructure. “Our roads remain a challenge,” he stated, attributing the issues to years of neglect and the impact of extreme weather events.

Browne emphasized that the deterioration of road conditions has been exacerbated by both historical oversight and recent environmental factors. “Not because we have neglected them, but because they were ignored for far too long and unusual extreme weather events have taken a harsh toll,” he explained, indicating that the government is fully aware of the pressing need for road improvements.

To address these concerns, the Prime Minister announced a multi-faceted approach to upgrading the country’s road network. “We have recently purchased $21 million worth of heavy equipment to accelerate the reconstruction of our roads, especially our community roads,” he noted, highlighting the government’s commitment to investing in the necessary resources for infrastructure improvement.

Browne also pointed out that while the government has made strides in certain areas, there is still much work to be done. “The task is not yet over, but you know from your own lived experience that the situation has dramatically improved,” he said, inviting citizens to acknowledge the progress made while recognizing the ongoing challenges.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of road infrastructure for economic development and public safety. “Our roads are the arteries of our economy, facilitating trade, tourism, and access to essential services,” he remarked. By improving road conditions, the government aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic growth across the islands.

Additionally, Browne called on citizens to be patient and supportive as the government works to implement these improvements. “We understand the frustrations that come with poor road conditions, and we are committed to rectifying this situation,” he stated, assuring the public that the government is prioritizing infrastructure development as part of its national agenda.

As the Prime Minister continues to address the issues surrounding road infrastructure, his remarks reflect a broader commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Antiguans and Barbudans through improved transportation networks. The success of these initiatives will depend on effective planning, resource allocation, and community support as the government moves forward with its infrastructure enhancement plans.

  1. Nothing will significantly change in the road infrastructure as long as 1) Not enough funds are being allocated by the government 2) The same decision-makers at Public Works are involved and 3) C.O. Williams Construction are involved. I’ve seen their work before and I’m not impressed.

The PM “called on citizens to be patient and supportive as the government works to implement these improvements”. Antiguans have been patient for years, many will say for decades, and both political parties should be blamed.

Hire a contractor that has the engineering expertise in all aspects of road construction from proper drainage to maintenance to safety and the ability to train Public Works for the future.

  2. Canada and the Dominican Republic have excellent experiences in road constructions and enhancements. Around two decades ago the government of the Dominican Republic launched an infrastructure initiative that greatly improved roads all over their country. It could be wise to investigate the model and actions used by our neighbor isle and benefit from their experience.

  3. There is no money to be made in road infrastructure, and that’s all this PM is about, making money for himself and his cronies, so instead he went and throw over $100mil into a corrupt airline like Air Peace, before that he spent millions to try and sell the Alpha Nero so he can full his pockets with million’s, instead of putting all the millions in the damn roads and dilapidated Government buildings all over the place.

There are plenty other places that those millions could of help the people of Antigua directly, but this PM doesn’t really have the hard working people of Antigua at heart.
You know how many billions have gone into the rich people pockets because of those bad roads? The Chinese and Japanese are laughing all the way to the bank with all the ships filled with car parts coming into Antigua, and car maintenance have been hitting citizens hard in their pockets because of these terrible roads. Not to mention the many injuries that have caused many to end up in the hospital because of these terrible roads.

So yes Mr PM, the roads are indeed our economic vehicle, but just for the rich and other first world countries.

So I hope that irony really sinks in for you.

  4. Mr. PM it is full time for you & the Minister of Works to take our road works to next level and provide the nation with concrete roads.

In addition, many roads need to converted into one ways especially in the Rural West constituency

  5. @Islanman26.,,ah wah ah guarne?

Antigua, Barbuda & REDONDA (I know how you feel about Redonda), can be greatly enhanced, its INFRASTRUCTURE, by a #diamond_mine on Montserrat.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste!
