Source: Real News Antigua: The lack of vehicles and other equipment, along with the shortage of manpower, appears to be hampering officers at the Langfords Police Station and preventing them from executing their duties.
A source tells REAL News that there was an attempt, by unknown men, to steal valuables from a businessman; but instead of calling the police for assistance, the man had to resort to taking matters into his own hands.
Allegedly in an attempt to scare off the four bandits, the businessman, who is a member of a well-known Arab family, was forced to discharge three shots from his licenced firearm.
Reportedly, he did so in the knowledge that officers could not have responded readily to his call for help, since that station does not have a working vehicle.
But after the incident, the businessman reportedly telephoned the Langfords Station and informed officers of the matter.
It is alleged that this incident occurred on March 6, after 1 a.m., with the report being made to the station at about 1:40 a.m.
Allegedly, the corporal who took the report contacted another officer from the Coolidge Police Station, requesting that he provide transportation for an officer from the Langfords Police Station to the scene.
However, that officer allegedly refused, stating that the vehicle being used at Coolidge was borrowed from the Airport and could not leave the district.
As a result, a corporal from the Special Services Unit (SSU) at Police Headquarters was contacted, and he had to assist in transporting the Langfords investigator to the scene.
Earlier this year, REAL News reported complaints that officers at the Langfords Police Station have been forced to work 12-hour shifts due to a shortage of manpower.

Is it any wonder why these stories continue to end with the words, “investigation continues”? I am by no means surprised. We have a none playing skipper leading our police force. This man is a pure waste of time. What crime strategy has he implemented since he has been sitting in that seat. All he does, is travel and bring nothing new other than oppress his officers. He is useless.!!! He has the most retirements under his stewardship because he is a waste of time. Then we have assistant commissioners that can when support him. Being able to beg is not a prerequisite of leading a police force. It just shows that you are a good beggar. I think Atlee P. Rodney needs to call it a day. The government should never put police in that bracket of 65 retiring.
There are no shortage of vehicles. Go up Scotts Hill and look down towards Police HQ on American Nd you will see a fleet of vehicles, new and in working order, which have not been assigned for some unknown reason. However 2 of them are in the possession of the girlfriend of a high ranking officer. Investigate and you will see. No one is in charge of the Police Force.

I agree that proper management need to be addressed to every government department without prejudice especially the police department. The government will be blamed but there is the police commissioner who should be overseeing management of the police service. With that said I pray this is addressed immediately. A businessman has a license firearm for what purposes? To keep till the police come then fire? He/she has it to defend their family, themselves, businesses. So he did what was right, sorry he didn’t hit one of them and expose who they are. We have a manpower shortage, but those in authority still looking to send personnel to Haiti.

Crime is at its worse, what the hell is going on, more than one person has drop the eight ball and it is very very sad, in short order to what I have just read, then vigilantly groups should be allowed in most cases.
Many police officers have cxc and can’t reason, cxc doesn’t make you a good police officer period. It’s good to have but troubleshooting and analytical skills is something different also some people learn at a later stage in life.
