Police Seek Telecoms’ Support in Tackling Crime
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda is seeking greater assistance from telecommunications providers to strengthen its fight against crime.
Maurice Merchant, Director General of Communication in the Prime Minister’s Office, said police believe the companies could play a larger role in supporting investigations.
“That was a matter that was discussed with the honorable Attorney General and his legal team there, to look at how best to convince, or to encourage – to persuade – telecommunication providers to provide necessary information to the police to aid them in their crime fighting efforts,” Merchant explained.

He acknowledged the sensitive nature of the issue, noting that providers also have a duty to safeguard customer privacy. “It is an area that all parties tread lightly, because the issue of privacy comes into play,” he said. “That’s why the police always encourage the general public to volunteer, to volunteer information in helping them to solve crimes.”
The push for enhanced cooperation comes as the police face public scrutiny over controversial incidents and a recent wave of violent robberies. Investigators regularly depend on timely information from the community to resolve cases, but Merchant suggested that when voluntary tips are not forthcoming, alternative avenues may have to be pursued.

This is a great start to the conversation. Carriers should be aiding police for example by us in the IMEI of a stolen cell phone to track whether a thief has activated said phone on their network. Once the original owner can provide proof such as the invoice or the box then the criminal needs to explain where they got the device from. Currently providers refuse to provide this information which truthfully has not a thing to do with privacy.
Yes it is a great idea but my question is to u police officers or in other words crime fighters why ull don’t jus shut ull mouths and go ahead with the ideas don’t u think for one the criminals watches ull moves as well smh great idea again but moving in silence is the best way to go
The investigators also have a responsibility in this. There are many times when the telecommunications companies passed necessary information to investigators yet they do not do the job the people of Antigua and Barbuda put them there to do. They need to stop throwing the blame and start doing their service to the nation effectively
That not making sense, those police want to take our privacy away, most of crime organizations happening face to face that wouldn’t change anything
What we need is a forensic lab not people people’s private phone conversations
So basically, the authorities are now seeking a way to invade your privacy. Nothing you do or say will no longer be private. I said it a long time ago “we are slowly becoming a society where we will have or can keep anything to ourselves”. Whether it’s for crime research purposes or otherwise, the time is here where even a simple chat between you and your partner will no longer stay between the 2 of you. This goes far beyond just crime prevention and more to do with being able to keep tabs on everything and everyone….. EVERYWHERE
Police want more data, but are they using what they already have properly?
The last Lin, if people really doesn’t provide information then there’s no way we can stop the crimes around here
Bs bs bs.
Phone conversation and such, are only relevant after the fact, to bring evidence against the perpetrator, it does nothing to prevent crime.
We are trying to prevent crimes, not just find more ways to slap a two year sentence on a arm robber, which happened in the last case with the young lady.
Terrible idea, and that’s why they are walking softly around the topic, because they know it will never pass into law.
Your phone is your possession, just like your house, and you would have to have serious probable cause to subpoena someone’s private phone.
Too vague..because where would it stop, and how much of that information in that phone is subject to search and seizure?
This AG is full of crap, and he knows it. This is just word play to try and appease the citizenship that they are doing something, but it will never happen, and shouldn’t be allowed.
Put more cops on the streets to ditter crime. Foster a better relationship with the public, so they do not feel burdened to disclose something to the authorities when they see or hear it.
That’s the best way to prevent crime, especially robberies of business and people’s dwellings.
I live in the US, and there are many times I forgot my car open(it happens) and next day not a thing is touched. One, because us neighbors look out for each other, and anything suspicious, they call 911.
Once the investigator, detective can show ‘cause’ to a judge/magistrate, that the information needed is relevant to the solving the crime(s), then there should be no reason why a warrant is not issued, to the Company to provide the information.
It’s surprising, that the legal department for the government has not amended the laws, to accommodate law enforcement in their investigations.
The other issue is with the cameras when the surveillance system is managed by a private company, that cannot enforce certain laws nor lay charges, therefore some evidence(s) collected may not be admissible in a trial.
As to the “invasion of privacy” query, concerns etc, 😂, the only privacy HUEmans have these days is the fact, that we can still breathe some fresh air, once in a blue, blood, full, harvest moon. Privacy today is like finding that elusive pot of gold, at the end of a

Kum een Short Shirt…”it’s all ILLUSION, an illusion…” for privacy is no more a part, of the HUEman Reality!

The APUA managers and that st phillip north MP purposely handicapped inet to give all the other cell companies including ACT by not providing wireless home Internet and there services, the government should right now get these military grade streetlights with built in camera and battery and solar panel out of china to replace all existing streetlights system and help the police and government solve crime.
It seems as though it’s not the black folks run this country, they always have to tip toe around their paternal white masters or be supervised by them.
You going tell me there is no self love for black people to have any interest in solving our own problems?
@Ras.
I understand what you’re saying..but that information can only be gathered after the crime has been committed, which does nothing to stop said crime in the first place.
Antigua needs remedies that prevent crime and stop the crime before it happens. That’s where the investigative work is needed, and this move does nothing to prevent crime.
There is no way to get information from a random person phone if there is not enough evidence to search that phone. Like guns coming into the island..they need immediate remedies to fix the issue of guns coming into the island, not try and find the guns after they are already there.
So that’s the point here..they don’t have too many issues in finding perpetrators, it’s stopping perpetrators from committing robberies, sometimes in broad daylight.
I don’t see how ones phone can stop those robberies in this situation?
Anyway I get the other part your query.
