Police have shut down widespread speculations that the shooting involving a customs officer is somehow linked to a three million dollar fraud investigation.
Cornell Benjamin, who sustained gunshot wounds to his leg, is reportedly attached to the customs department responsible for under-evaluation, false invoicing and smuggling.
The shooting incident took place on Sunday October 13, 2019 at Cassada Gardens around 9:30pm.
According to police reports, Benjamin was inspecting his property after hearing his dogs barking incessantly. In the process, he saw two men lunging at him from the brushes while firing shots.
Benjamin was shot in his leg at least five times and was rushed to Mount St. Johns Medical Center, where doctors reported that his condition is stable and his injury is non-life threatening.
The shooting happened days after the government revealed that an investigation was to be launched into missing funds at the department leaving many to believe that both incidents were linked.
However, Acting Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney has dismissed that theory saying there is no evidence that suggests there is a correlation.
“I am mindful as to what the media is making a correlation, but we have no evidence to suggest that. None of the information that we have gathered thus far has indicated that it had to do with some internal matter that was happening at the Customs department” said Rodney.
Rodney also revealed that the law enforcement officers are still working to determine what really happened as it relates to the case which is still active.

One must always be careful when issuing absolute conclusions in an investigation that is ongoing and is not in a state of closure….now
It is very possible that twists and turns can shift the investigation to the very path that was dismissed by Mr Rodney.
How can you say there is no correlation when you do not know what happened and why? Nonsense!
This senior police officer is talking like a politican. How could he be such a jack ass or think the people are jack asses to believe there is no evidence of collation when he won’t even look for the shooter. The custom officer came upon something he wasn’t suppose to. Why the boss at custom or the PM or the AG has been MUM on the story? The guy was suppose to be taken out or back off of something.
