DROWNING INCIDENT
On 28 August 2022, at 7:54 pm, the Coast Guard received a report of a man named Malcolm Cornelius who was missing after falling off a kayak in the vicinity of Runaway Bay.
The initial report received by the Coast Guard indicated that he was one of two persons who went out on the kayak. It was reported that the kayak had overturned, and that the individuals on board were not wearing life jackets.
The other individual struggled and was assisted back to shore by other persons were on the shore.
The Coast Guard immediately deployed a vessel which departed at 7:55 pm and commenced a search of the area assisted by a private vessel M/V CURSILA.
After an extensive search, the body of Mr. Malcolm Cornelius was found by M/V CURSILA at 8:58 pm and was recovered by the Coast Guard vessel.
The body was then taken to Coast Guard Base, Deep Water Harbour and turned over to the police, who confirmed his identity. The District Doctor arrived at the Coast Guard Base and after checking the body, pronounced Mr. Cornelius dead at 9:53 pm.
The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force would like to extend condolences to the family of the deceased as they mourn this tragic loss.

Tragedy after tragedy. Fire after fire and dead found inside. People safety first. Hmmmmmmmmm no life jacket. Too many people around Antigua cannot swim .
so why the ass you na try fu go open swimming classes and go teach them how fa swim and water saftey?
All people like you do is sit around and talk but never plan on doing no action.
The operators of the kayaking services should be providing life jackets to their patrons. Some perso s think they are invincible and take too many chances. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family of this young man who is now gone much too soon. May his soul rest in peace.
Idiot can’t swim but he going out on kayak.
Well let’s not bash one another over this incident.
Let’s look at the facts; 1) a kayak is a water vehicle that’s prone to capsize. 2) the occupants of such a vehicle should not venture into water in this vehicle without a life jacket. 3) Serious consideration should be taken into account before being a passenger in this vehicle if you’re not a fairly good swimmer.

However he shouldn’t have been allowed into that kayak without a life jacket. Period.
Please be respectful. A young man lost his life, a mother lost a son. It is true he was a strong swimmer and was not wearing a life jacket. But with the nature of kayaks, it is very possible to get stuck when it overturns.
