Police Top Cop Acknowledges existence of ‘ bad apples’ within police force and emphasizes mechanisms for addressing them.

“We are not going to let the minority destroy the good work of the majority. Yes, like any other organization, we live in a fallen world, if you want to put it that way.

So, within our organization, you’ll find individuals who are not sticking to the rules and regulations that we have to work with, not staying within the confines of our regulations. However, we have mechanisms in place to deal with them, and we have been dealing with them.

Unfortunately, some have had to be asked to leave the service. These things happen. But that small minority does not represent the majority of the police force.

I am proud to be a member of this police force. I have been in the police force for 41 years, going on 42.

Over the years, I have seen the type of policing that we have. We have quality policemen, and the majority is doing well. However, every time one bad apple does something, everybody thinks it’s the whole police force.

And that’s not the case. It’s unfortunate, and we all feel it because, I mean, it’s just like a member of your family doing something, and everybody thinks the whole family is bad. It’s not one individual.

Every family has a black sheep. And I think we are not immune to that in the police force.

We are taking police officers from our society, and our society has both good and bad. Sometimes, somebody can come and be misguided.

Some individuals might act irrationally. We don’t know what type of day they were having.

And sometimes, in that split second, you have to make a decision. And if that decision is wrong, you are chastised for it.

And the entire organization is chastised for it. But sometimes, it might just be a bad judgment call in the spur of the moment.”

  1. 41 going on to 42 years and u till ah work. Tral man time to go home and play wid the granpikney and dem not like u doing a good job anyways!!! Time to retire Atlee!!!!

    • He probably joined the force at an early age …the number of years being in the force does not determime one’s age …
      Lol…

  2. All law enforcement agencies must have someone to monitor and evaluate them constantly. In most civilized countries, this is called Internal Affairs. The police definitely are in dire need of one here. Noone would be exempt from internal investigation. Atley Rodney would probably have been charged for his role in the August 8th incident, the cops who let the vampire killer escape would also be under heavy investigation. Where was Ailey Rodney and Cutie Benjamin after the Syrian was killed? What happened to the press conference?
Someone has to watch the watchers.

  3. You cannot blame the commissioner and tell him it’s time to go home! The government change the law to 65. I find he address the issue of bad apples quite well and he must be commended for it. I think though that he must seriously consider which option to apply and take all the circumstances into account in determining when to deal with a so called “bad apple”.

  4. Start clean up the guard desk at St John’s. A radio host on Thursday night on Hitz Fm had to be teaching your officers about the laws they continue breaching and trampling on the rights of the citizens. My Question to them is it that they don’t know or they’re bent on doing what they want?

  5. What a load of hogwash from the top cop. Long before he became commissioner, Lindquist recommended a $1000.00 bonus for each officer after rogue elements were weeded our. Years later nothing happened.
At one point a senior police officer had the only key for the room they kept some herb, when the time came to go to court the evidence was missing, nothing came of that. Who can forget the police credit union fraud when the officer only got a slap on the risk. It would take a long time to recount the many instances of police officers not held to the same account as John public.

  6. No public servant should be drinking on the job, but in the Caribbean it is done in the wide open, especially among police officers who are responsible for public safety..clean that up and you might be getting somewhere with your so-call bad apples. I was in Antigua recently and witnessed this behavior over and over again, just really irresponsible behavior.
