Police officers are undergoing training in the use of audio recording devices for interviewing crime suspects.
But first, the law which will pave the way for this to be admissible as evidence must be passed and published in the Gazette, Attorney General Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin has said.
He said the Interviewing of Suspects for Serious Crimes Bill will make it to the next session of parliament having already had its first reading.
The police force currently uses a handwritten method in which an officer records the questions and answers of the interview.
Training for the advanced method is being conducted at the Sir Wright F George Police Academy by two interview trainers from the United Kingdom.
Trainer Andy Carr said this will bring Antigua in line with interview techniques which obtain internationally.
“This equipment maintains the integrity of the interviews and also protects the suspect,” he said.
Commissioner of Police, Wendel Robinson is calling for the passage of local legislation governing the use the advanced recording technique.
“The time is ripe so that we can roll out this methodology of investigation as soon as possible,” Wendell told state media.
