Prime Minister Gaston Browne has congratulated the government and people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines on the country’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nationals Security Council.
In a message following Friday’s election, Browne, in a message to St. Vincent’s Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said it is a result of “hard work and earned respect for your convincing election today as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.”
“You have demonstrated that smallness is not an obstacle to meaningful participation in global decision making.
Browne said he has “every confidence that St Vincent and the Grenadines will give a strong voice to the causes of small states in the Security Council and that it will continue to uphold principled and objective positions on issues with which the Council will grapple.”
“Antigua and Barbuda is proud of St Vincent and the Grenadines and we send our best wishes for a successful tenure on the Security Council and assure you of our unstinting support,” the Prime Minister said.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday become the smallest country to be elected to the United Nations Security Council.

Wow, this is great news for the Caribbean and for Antigua, since we are closely linked with St. Vincent. Hopefully the PM of St. Vincent will show extreme thanks and gratitude to PM Browne, since PM Browne put his full support behind St. Vincent for this to take place. This is great news for our region! Finally the UN will have to listen to what the Caribbean and small island-nations think about global security issues.
Indeed we Vincentians are grateful for the support of the people of Antigua and Barbuda.
I know our PM Dr. The Hon. Ralph Gonsalves will support the Caribbean and Latin America with dignity and excellence in leadership…PM Gonsalves is a true Caribbean leader , we are so blessed to have him leading SVG over 20 years and counting
Now what?
This is a great triumph for the small states of the Caribbean. It’s also just terrific for us to have a genuine socialist and progressive voice on the Security Council. Maurice Bishop would be proud of his great friend, brother and comrade from St. Vincent. Peace.
Um, a great victory for the small states the Caribbean?
Perhaps a look at the global view of this event would be enlightening.
SVG has endorsed the Maduro government in Venuzuela, putting it in opposition to the US and Europe and aligned with China and Russia.
Now you are welcome to your opinion about the Venuzuelan government, but, the temporary membership of the security council lasts 2 years.
How long does the ill will last for?
It’s not letting me our big neighbour vie s us particularly favourably since they pulled the airbase, embassy etc
