PM Confident in Labour Party’s Renewal: ‘Something Special is Happening’

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has declared that the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) is experiencing a period of renewal, citing record-breaking turnout in internal elections and a surge in enthusiasm among supporters.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne described the party’s recent branch elections as unprecedented, with some constituencies seeing hundreds of members actively participating in the selection of branch officers.

“I have never seen this level of engagement before,” Browne said. “The Labour Party is stronger, more vibrant, and more energized than ever. Something special is happening.”

The prime minister pointed to St. George’s constituency, where over 500 people reportedly registered for the branch elections, as an example of the growing momentum within the party.

He credited the increased interest to the influx of new political talent and the public’s recognition that ABLP is committed to renewal and progress.

Browne also dismissed opposition claims that his leadership is weakening, noting that he received the highest percentage of votes among all candidates in the last general election.

Instead, he argued that voter dissatisfaction was directed at certain ABLP candidates, leading to some losses, but insisted that the party has responded by bringing in fresh faces to contest seats in the next election.

He added that the UPP’s internal conflicts and lack of direction are also fueling Labour Party support, predicting that opposition MPs in vulnerable constituencies will face an uphill battle in the next election.

Browne’s remarks come as the ABLP continues candidate selection processes in key constituencies, with intense competition among hopefuls looking to secure nominations.

  1. UPP dysfunction and turmoil are the reasons why the ALP feels like it is on the rise. Had the UPP not imploded and were it still very much a party in the rise, the ALP would not feel confident in itself.
