PM Browne Warns U.S. Tariffs Could Hurt Antigua and Barbuda’s Economy

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has raised alarms over new U.S. trade policies, warning that a 10 percent baseline tariff on all imports could significantly hinder Antigua and Barbuda’s economic growth in 2025.

Originally projecting a 6 percent GDP increase, Browne now says those figures may need to be revised downward.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Browne pointed out that with the country importing far more than it exports to the U.S., the tariffs will worsen the trade imbalance and likely trigger inflation, as higher import costs are passed on to consumers.

Ambassador Sir Ronald Sanders has also called for a reassessment of the tariff regime affecting Caricom nations, criticizing the disproportionate impact on small, import-reliant economies.

Additional proposed U.S. levies, including those targeting Chinese-built ships, could further escalate freight costs and economic strain.

The government is being urged to find alternative strategies to cushion the impact and ensure economic stability.

  1. It’s comforting to know that our leader is also a qualified financial expert. He is 100% accurate on the impact Trump’s tariffs will have on the Antigua/Barbuda economy and the steps that can be taken to mitigate the negative impacts. Such as growing what we eat and eating what we grow.

  2. No question higher Tarrifs results in higher cost to the consumer.
Gaston Browne always look for ways to cast blame. His economic model is like a sand castle, with a new flavor every season.

How about practicing self sufficiency. Grow more food. Stop contaminating the surrounding waterways that produces seafood .
Take advantage of the tropical sunshine and produce your own electric power with solar fields where fossil fuel is just a backup
Practice intermediate technology and create marginal advantages to tourism.
The tourism economic model, is a race to the bottom.
Spend less time and human resources pursuing handouts from international agencies.

  3. I thought China was going to be Antigua’s Saviour…..when all you rass should be investing more into FARMERS and farming here you go enriching yourselves.
    COVID TAUGHT YOU NOTHING

  4. But a wha dis? Chet Greene say the tariff won’t hurt Antigua and then now Gaston a contradict him saying it will hurt Antigua, somebody is seeking attention since they in trouble with the USA and the Russian. Because I was shock at there original pronouncement that it not hurting us which really break down to the ALP politicians and the rich one percenters would not be affected because of deep pockets.

  5. This is the moment I warned you could happen numerous times for years in which community trust funds, laws on demanding hotels and other big entities must purchase a percentage of their requirements locally, and encouraging the cash stays longer within a community and the country.

If Antigua and Barbuda really had a good visionary and leaders then these tariffs would have be as harmful as they are. One day you all will begin to listen to me. May soon before anymore death and debt in Antigua and Barbuda.

Some leaders thinks showing a building is a sign of great accomplishment as society is so stupid, they think, they will mention the pretty buildings that was built by me and forget about their socio-economic problems. In Antigua, that may work for most, but not for all. Soon, hopefully, it will not work at all.

  6. With all this talk about tarrifs affecting us nothing has to change, for all the of price gouging that was going on in the supermarkets and other business I think the government should insist prices remain the same, people need to get a break from these vampires. Now is the time to show you care for the people, the price gouging was allowed with government complicity

  7. @Eldread,
I thought I was the only one who noticed that contraction. It felt you it the blind leading the blind.
CARICOM met with Marco Rubio. What’s the readout of what was called a high level meeting?
See Elread: there are the one percenters, but there are also the Ecumenical Enablers, as well as the European Grifters. They are among the groups who exploits the poor and middle class in this Country.
Sadly, most are struggling from paycheck to paycheck and those who have marriages are slaves to the banking industry.
This is about “fools” fooling the more foolish.
My fellow traveller; you can’t make this shit up, even if you wanted too.

  8. The cost of living in Antigua/Barbuda is already off the charts and here’s another opportunity for the TEN MILLION U.S DOLLAR MAN, who never ignored the chance to benefit from a crisis; to blame th USA for as long as he’s Prime Minister, similar to what he’s doing with the emergence of covid. He’s not the end user of anything here so he gives us his perspective but we know differently because we live it everyday. Anyway, your Minister of Trade said that we have nothing to worry about, which looks more like the tail wagging the dog and seems to be very common in the ALP.

  9. The 10% tariffs for goods imported into the US from Antigua is useless. Antigua and Barbuda don’t export anything.
The tariffs on other countries whose goods in transit the US to get here is the problem.

  10. Then why do you Gaston Browne and Customs all charge us duties based on the value of the goods plus the cost of the shipping plus the cost of insurance? That is highway robbery and all of you have been getting away with it for decades and it needs to be stopped. Then they have the gall to add warrant officer fees, brokerage fees and pay the person to get the stuff.

Y’all nothing but a bunch of teefin creative self enrichment criminals. Every last one of you and all of you need to be removed from these positions.

That is nothing but pure bullshit and a money grab paid by us the citizens. I want one person to bring this up when they running for a constituent. I will vote for them.

    Stop the teefin

  11. Sharon Lycorish, if the PM is such a financial expert why the price gouging over the years was not addressed, is it that the administration did not care about the hard working people of the country but only the 1 percenters? Looking for your response

  12. What my issue with USA is that they claim that they have been treated unfairly by the rest of the world. but I remember at one time everything was made in the USA. And then they say it’s about the trade deficit they have with countries. Well if that was their yardstick then why have tariffs against the small Caribbean Islands. The US certainly doesn’t have a trade deficit with any of us. It’s actually the other way around. Especially in Antigua we import almost everything from the US. Especially our food products. And don’t we have the WTO when we have trade disputes to go to. But I guess the USA doesn’t follow any dulling of the WTO. Antigua and Barbuda have experience that first hand. We won our case and they refuse tonosy us.
