PM Browne Urges Opposition Invest in Pensioner’s Beach Project

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is encouraging citizens—regardless of political affiliation—to seize investment opportunities at Pensioner’s Point, a government-led land initiative.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne show, the Prime Minister described it as “total ignorance” to reject empowerment opportunities based on party lines.

He emphasized that government-owned land is a national resource and should benefit all Antiguans and Barbudans, including those in the diaspora.

Browne revealed that only six of the 40 acres at Pensioner’s Beach are earmarked for a hotel, with the remainder subdivided into individual plots to appeal to locals who prefer land ownership.

He also highlighted the growing popularity of Airbnb-style tourism—now accounting for 35% of stays—as a reason for this approach.

To improve accessibility, Browne proposed using existing property as collateral and urged citizens to explore creative financing solutions.

He noted strong interest from overseas Antiguans but said many remain unaware of such opportunities.

The initiative, he said, aims to promote inclusive economic growth and shared national ownership.

  1. That’s a good gesture, but what we should do as a government instead a banking CIP monies on cbu bank of Stuart, is put them.in Antigua development bank to create secure low interest loans for Antiguan born, note not the foreigners living among us that get citizenship, the Antiguan generations are here and will stay to meet their obligation, the Airbnb is a good suggestion that can help finance the depth, and the hotels that are there should not get access to the beach front to monopolize it, it must be an accessable park so the the private home owners access and Airbnb to be effective in value of rent. Good idea but just nationalize it, bank financing etc.

  2. The idea of putting AirBnb styled housing on that land is brilliant. The government could lead the way like they did at North sound and get one or two structures going up. Do remember that it is reclaimed land from the dredging and the winds can be quite intense during storms so hurticane windows and adequate first floor heights will be needed to prevent flooding in the future. I also agree that benches and shading could be strategically placed with proper lighting. The beach areas nick-name used to be called pensioners corner and knuckle beach, now it is called pensioners beach. The more vibrant the area becomes the more peaceful and welcoming this area will be. In addition the addition of a boat ramp will allow dingus and smaller tourist type boats to travel over to the beach from St. Johns pier for added economic opportunities. It was always the plan to make that area more desirable and financially empower Antiguans who build over there. This is one such a place where all entrepreneurial people from all parties can benefit by building an Airbnb there.
