PM Browne Criticizes UPP’s Candidate Struggles for St. Peter By-Election
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has criticized the United Progressive Party (UPP) for their apparent difficulties in finalizing a candidate for the St. Peter by-election, scheduled for January 14, 2025. Speaking on a recent broadcast, Browne remarked on the party’s unpreparedness, suggesting it reflects a lack of organization and leadership.
“I don’t think they had on the pants anyway,” Browne said, alluding to the party’s struggles. He claimed the UPP has yet to secure a candidate, with one potential prospect reportedly demanding a significantly increased financial incentive. “The figure is up to $100,000 now from $50,000,” Browne alleged, hinting at internal discord within the UPP.
Browne also shared details from a WhatsApp exchange with former UPP candidate Tevaughn “Peter Redz” Harriette, who contested the St. Peter seat in the 2023 General Election. “He told me he’s finished with them,” Browne said. “He’s at war with them, or they’re at war with him—or both.” According to the Prime Minister, Harriette has ruled out any possibility of returning as a candidate, leaving the UPP scrambling for options.
The Prime Minister suggested the situation is unprecedented in Antigua and Barbuda’s political history. “I’m not aware of any electoral contest where a party doesn’t have a candidate in place after an election is called,” Browne remarked. “Most right-thinking Antiguans and Barbudans cannot recall this ever happening before.”
Browne further hinted at the uncertainty surrounding the UPP’s remaining prospective candidate, stating, “He’s blowing hot and cold. At one point, he says yes; at another, he’s hesitant.”
The St. Peter by-election follows the tragic death of long-serving MP Asot Michael, who was found stabbed in his home on November 5. Michael’s passing has left a significant political void in the constituency, and parties are gearing up for what promises to be a closely watched contest.
The UPP has not officially commented on Browne’s statements or confirmed any details regarding their candidate selection process. With Nomination Day set for December 31, 2024, the party faces a tight timeline to finalize its plans and present a strong contender for the by-election.

You are a poor excuse for a leader.
Every good leader wants their party be in ascendance, but they do not want the other party to implode. Not you. You are watching this UPP thing with glee.

I already hear from reliable sources that the A.B.L.P. candidate has told his leader NOT to come into the constituency and campaign.

The UPP is not struggling to find suitable a candidate. They are struggling to find a leader. Should they have a proper, intelligent and capable leader there would be several people raising their hands to represent the party. However people are not willing to be lead in the UPP by a labourite nor a sheep.
People want to see the backs of the labour cabal however not with a leader who doesn’t know if he coming or going. Antigua has never seen such discontentment in the political arena. The only viable option loves being in opposition.
