PM Browne Thanks China for Supporting Antigua’s Housing Revolution

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has expressed gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for its financial and technical assistance in the Booby Alley housing project, which remains on track for completion by March or April 2026. During a recent site visit, Browne highlighted the crucial role China has played in the government’s broader housing agenda and national development.

Browne underscored that Antigua and Barbuda are direct beneficiaries of China’s philosophy of shared prosperity. “I had the opportunity to meet with President Xi Jinping, who elaborated on China’s vision of shared prosperity. It is evident that Antigua and Barbuda are reaping the benefits of this philosophy, and we extend our deepest appreciation to China for their continued support,” he stated.

The Booby Alley redevelopment project, which will provide 150 climate-resilient two-bedroom homes, is one of several government initiatives aimed at improving living conditions for vulnerable citizens. Browne described the project as transformational, emphasizing its role in upgrading the community and ensuring sustainable housing. “These homes will be climate-resilient, built with pile structures to withstand environmental challenges. Our people will benefit from a significant upgrade in their living conditions, and the quality of these homes matches the best found anywhere in the world.”

The Prime Minister also defended his government’s commitment to inclusivity, pointing out that the new housing development offers residents an improved standard of living. “The view from these homes overlooking St. John’s Harbour is better than the view from my own home. This demonstrates our government’s dedication to creating opportunities for all, including the poor and vulnerable.”

Browne, who has a background in construction, credited his administration’s vision for the country’s housing boom, stating that no other contractor on the island has built as many homes as he has during his tenure. “My vision is to empower people with better homes—climate-resilient homes that will last for generations. This is part of our broader housing revolution over the last decade.”

The Booby Alley project forms part of the government’s efforts to modernize urban areas, with Browne highlighting major investments in St. John’s, including the expansion of the cargo port and cruise terminal. “We have spent nearly half a billion dollars upgrading critical infrastructure. St. John’s West is the place to be—promise made, promise kept.”

As the project nears completion, Browne reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustainable development and international partnerships. “This is one of the best projects I’ve presided over. It is truly transformational, targeting those in greatest need, and I am proud to be serving as Prime Minister at such an exciting time in our nation’s development.”

With continued collaboration between Antigua and Barbuda and the People’s Republic of China, Browne expressed confidence that further development projects will enhance the country’s infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
