PM Browne Stresses National Unity Amid Rising Crime and Political Controversy

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called for national unity as Antigua and Barbuda grapples with rising crime and political tensions. In a national address, he urged citizens to stand together in the face of recent tragedies, misinformation, and efforts to destabilize the country.

Browne’s speech addressed multiple pressing issues, including the murder of nine-year-old Chantel Crump, the suspected suicide of a female police officer, and allegations of mismanagement surrounding the sale of the Alfa Nero yacht. While acknowledging the weight of these events, he reassured the public that his administration remains committed to justice, transparency, and the well-being of all citizens.

The Prime Minister outlined his government’s zero-tolerance approach to violent crime, pledging full support for law enforcement. He announced plans to bolster police investigations with forensic resources, including cadaver dogs, to enhance crime-solving capabilities.

“My administration will not rest until justice is delivered in full measure to the perpetrators,” he said, vowing to protect children and vulnerable citizens from harm.

Browne also urged the public to play a role in crime prevention, stating:

“We must report all suspicious activities, and send a clear message to anyone who commits or plots such crimes, that we will not allow them to contaminate our country, harm our children, or intimidate our society.”

Despite the mounting challenges, Browne urged citizens to reject division and political exploitation. He framed unity as the key to overcoming adversity, whether in combating crime, supporting mental health initiatives, or addressing misinformation.

“We have faced sorrow and anxiety in recent days, but in these moments of darkness, we must draw ever closer as one people; united in love, empathy, and our shared desire to see Antigua and Barbuda thrive,” he said.

With his government facing both security and political pressures, Browne’s address positioned unity as a necessary foundation for resilience and progress in Antigua and Barbuda.
