PM Browne Sets 18–24 Month Goal to Clean Up and Beautify Antigua and Barbuda
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has unveiled a nationwide clean-up and beautification programme aimed at transforming the country’s appearance within the next two years.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne said the government had applied to the Global Climate Fund (GCF) for US $30–40 million to support the initiative, which will target derelict properties, abandoned vehicles, and neglected public spaces.
“Within the next 18 to 24 months, we’re cleaning up… We cannot have the country looking so ugly,” the Prime Minister declared.
As part of the drive, National Housing has been tasked with establishing a 10-acre nursery at Painters to propagate plants. Working alongside the Environment Division and Forestry Department, the nursery will support an ambitious target of planting one million plants per year.

In addition, the government plans to establish a special demolition unit to tackle derelict properties. The unit will mark and legally process buildings deemed beyond repair, with demolition costs charged back to owners.
Browne urged Antiguans and Barbudans, including those living abroad with property on the islands, to cooperate with the clean-up effort. He argued that a country with one of the region’s highest per capita incomes should not allow itself to be disfigured by dereliction.
The initiative forms part of the government’s broader commitment to improve the nation’s environment, strengthen community pride, and enhance Antigua and Barbuda’s appeal to residents and visitors alike.

A few weeks ago an announcement said government would start removing derelict vehicles again not one thing has been done since. Bolans needs special attention. There is a young thug who thinks he owns the government road and has 2 for the junkyard

It’s just like every Christmas you start with the ham and turkey distribution… clean up fort James beach and stop the shit.. where Russell’s bar was there’s nothing but garbage all around and on the rocks of the beach .. you guys have some nerves sending tourist down there from the cruise ships… stop lying .. you need to stop lying … or just maybe you might be getting Alzheimer’s…
We really need to clean up and beautify the mindset of the people and have laws with teeth and stiff penalties that hopefully will deter and stop people from littering or else whatever is done would be in vain.
Antigua is a beautiful place but some of her residents do not care for her beauty. There litter and fly tipping is disgusting and offensive.
I propose a fine of $1000+ for anyone found littering. This may seem overly punitive but it would sure make the absent minded think twice before throwing their KFC box out of the window
Dirty minds produce dirty behaviors. Clean up politics, then the culture will follow suit. Politicians don’t care, the people knows this so they don’t care either.
