Prime Minister Gaston Browne has expressed his thankfulness to all those who made it possible for the 45 students of Antigua and Barbuda nationality to move to safety, during the passage of Hurricane Melissa over Jamaica this weekend.
The 45 students have been moved to the Hotel Pegasus in New Kingston–at the request and with the compliments of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda–where they will remain until Monday, 27 October 2025, or whenever the winds and rain subside.
The Prime Minister has asked all churches and congregations in Antigua and Barbuda to seek God’s blessings on all of Jamaica, and to ask God’s protection of the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda and other nation’s students studying in Jamaica.
The reports reaching Antigua and Barbuda indicate that the 45 students are securely housed at the multi-storied hotel and are very thankful for the intervention of the Gaston Browne administration.
The Prime Minister pledges further assistance if necessary should the students be displaced following passage of the storm.
He implores the organizers of today’s National Independence Service, to be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Creekside, to pray for guidance and to say a special prayer for the protection of the students.
The Prime Minister is unavoidably absent from the State, but receives regular updates on the Jamaica situation. The Prime Minister returns to Antigua on Monday.

St Kitts chose to fly he their students…you chose to put them in hotel. Mek that mek sense.
As a mother of an Engineering Student in Jamaica. I would like to personally thank you for all you have done for my Son so far. He is presently housed at the Pegasus Hotel with other Students and I feel a lot better than the few days before. Thank you Mr PM. You made my Son felt very important and cared for. Thank you, thank you, thank you
Securely, really?
Let me tell you something.. Pegasus is no hurricane shelter, so I don’t know how secure you can be in a hotel that’s a 100 feet about ground where the winds are the strongest.
And don’t forget about the aftermath with looting and the steeling. You should have used the peoples purse that you invested in The Lait air peace deal and send a few flights to yo for our people.
Hey, but don’t listen to me..I’m just a dumbo on the side.
When you talk to any Jamaican who have lived through a very bad hurricane, most would tell you that Hurricane Gilbert in September 1988 was the worst thing they have ever experienced. Predictions are that Gilbert is tame in comparison to what is expected on Tuesday. The rank and file of Jamaicans are scared out of their wits in anticipation of almost 48 hours of fierce winds and torrential and catastrophic floods islandwide. It’s not gonna be pretty when it’s all over. Pray for Jamaica and everyone who is about to witness and experience this monster 👻.
@ Grateful One,
If you felt so badly as you claim a few days ago; why didn’t you write to ANR asking for the Prime Minister to fly your sons and others out of Jamaica.
Keep in mind that Gaston is partying in Jamaica with his peeps. His words and reported to ANR not mine.
When you felt so baldly as you say a few days ago. It was the time for you to demand Gaston remove your son and others out of harms way.
Somebody going to pay for this big mistake which will include the normal kickback. Now after his folly Gaston is asking for prayers and guidance.
If you are so prone to write then Ask Gaston why Barbudans why haven’t Barbuda gotten off temporarily electricity hook ups since Irma?
Ok so Gaston over in Dominica jamming and took time out to pander to the Jamaican votes rather than look insensitive, his adviser a working.
We are to be grateful n stop being a sumbo
Mr Pm whosoever is in favour of that plan within your government administration is an idiot. The expected damage will see widespread damage that will likely disrupt school operations beyond this week. We have a Five islands campus UWI students can likely assimilate into. Meanwhile other students will have to bite the bullet and should have come home. Now if the airports are damaged and flights are resumed in short order our students remain in ground zero days after when they should have left earlier. It’s just an added expense the students should have been FLOWN OUT!!!!
Grenada also flew their students out.
The Minister of Tourism said yestterday that the hotel association was in contact with the airlines to increase capacity for persons wanting to get out…Gaston on the other hand made new bookings and put people in hotel. Help me make this make sense!!!!
