Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government is prepared to purchase derelict and abandoned properties across the capital to make land and housing available to poor Antiguans and Barbudans.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne said the move is part of a wider effort to clean up the city, revitalize rundown communities, and address the growing need for affordable housing.

“Those of you who have these derelict properties — the government is prepared to do a swap or to even buy these properties from you,” Browne said.

“If you don’t cooperate, you may find yourself in a situation in which we have to clean them periodically, attach the costs, and even have to demolish buildings.”

He said the initiative would target neglected lots and abandoned buildings, particularly in St. John’s, and convert them into opportunities for citizens in need of land or housing.

“We’re giving an option, especially those of you who live in the diaspora,” Browne said. “If you have properties here, especially in St. John’s, that are derelict, that are abandoned, the government will pay you.

We’ll buy them and sell them to other poor people who may be in need of land to build properties within St. John’s.”

Browne emphasized that the program would be managed transparently and not used for political favoritism.

“We’re not buying them to give them to politicians or their families,” he said. “We’ll make sure that these lots and even properties go to deserving individuals who need them.”

The prime minister said the government’s broader goal is to remove eyesores, improve public safety, and promote community pride while helping working-class Antiguans gain access to urban property ownership.

“We have to rebuild the city and give our people the chance to live decently,” Browne said. “This is about helping those who have been left behind while cleaning up our country at the same time.”
