Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his administration has slashed the cost of road construction to about EC $2 million per mile, compared to roughly EC $10 million per mile under the previous United Progressive Party (UPP) government.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne said the reduction reflects improved efficiency, stronger oversight, and better value for taxpayers.
“When the UPP was in office, they were paying ten million dollars a mile for roads,” Browne said. “We are doing it for about two million dollars a mile — and with better quality work.”
He credited the Ministry of Works, engineers, and local contractors for delivering major savings while maintaining high construction standards.
“We have demonstrated that we can deliver infrastructure at a fraction of what it used to cost,” he said. “That’s because of accountability and better oversight.”
The prime minister said the results are evident in the government’s ongoing national road rehabilitation programme, which includes upgrades to All Saints Road, Valley Road North, Anchorage Road, and the Sir Sydney Walling Highway.
He added that the upcoming $100 million road improvement project, starting with a $10 million drawdown for All Saints Road, will continue to apply the same cost-efficient approach.
“Our goal is to deliver better roads for less,” Browne said. “That’s what good management looks like.”

Mr. PM, you could have my vote if you would just stop blaming the UPP for everything. You’ve been in power long enough to take responsibility. It just shows your insecurities.
I presume you are not familiar with the context in which the statement was made. It was a response to a baseless claim by UPP operatives, that the few roads constructed or refurbished during the UPP’s tenure cost less per mile.
@Gatson Browne.
I suggest you stop the BS dude. Really?
Stop Bamboozling the people, enough is enough. The past 15 years has been the most lucrative in Antigua’s history, so where is all that money that was raked in from taxes, duties and all the other revenue streams gone?
That’s what the people wants to know. I’m asking because I know this, because even I and a few of my partners invested in Antigua ( at a heavy price of course).
Does this Prime Minister make up this utter nonsense as he goes along whilst in office?
Any educated or right thinking Antiguan will recognise that material and labour costs were a lot cheaper when the UPP were in office. Today, if you allow for inflation, importing materials and heavy machinery has all sky rocketed.
Sometimes you wonder if Gaston Browne engages he brain before he open he damn mout’ – step up nah Chet!
Isn’t any wonder that many people living here think that we need an urgent change from Browne, who comes over more like a LUCRIPETOUS money-hungry used-car salesman than the leader of this great country.
Can’t wait to vote he out, out, out …
