PM Browne Threatens Legal Action Over Alfa Nero Allegations
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has announced his intention to pursue legal action in response to allegations surrounding the Alfa Nero litigation, stating that he will file a countersuit against those making false claims. Speaking on his weekly Browne and Browne Show, Browne dismissed accusations that funds from the sale of the Alfa Nero superyacht were misappropriated, vowing to take legal action against individuals and media entities he believes have defamed him and his family.
“I’m going to actually sue. I’m going to countersue and I’m also going to enjoin D. Gisele Isaac in the litigation,” Browne declared, referencing the opposition figure whom he accused of spreading misinformation. He argued that the claims against him were politically motivated and designed to damage his reputation.
The Prime Minister also signaled his readiness to take international media outlets to court over what he described as defamatory reporting on the matter. “I’ve already signaled to AP [Associated Press] that I’m asking my lawyers to advise me on the possibility of taking them to court here in Antigua, where I am likely to get a favorable decision,” he stated.
Browne warned that local and regional publications that republish the allegations could also face legal repercussions. He pointed to previous legal victories where media entities were forced to retract false reports after legal threats, emphasizing that he is prepared to take similar action if necessary.
The Alfa Nero controversy stems from the government’s seizure and sale of the superyacht, which had been abandoned in Antigua’s waters. The sale, which reportedly netted $40 million, has been the subject of intense scrutiny, with claims emerging that funds were mismanaged. However, Browne has consistently denied any wrongdoing, insisting that all transactions were handled transparently and in accordance with the law.
As legal battles loom, Browne remains adamant that he will defend his administration’s integrity. He reiterated that the allegations were baseless and politically motivated, stating that those responsible would be held accountable in court.
