PM Browne: Restitution Preferable to Prolonged Investigations

Prime Minister Gaston Browne says restitution is often a better approach than lengthy and costly corruption investigations that yield little financial recovery for the state.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Browne argued that in many cases, “people are guilty and you can’t find them guilty in the court of law,” resulting in years of legal delays and millions spent on probes.

He cited past cases, including one involving former government figures, which he said demonstrated how investigations can drag on without producing convictions or returning funds to the public purse.

“If we can get these people to cooperate and they decide to provide restitution with the understanding that there’s no repeat, I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Browne said.

“We recover a few million dollars… it’s less money that we probably have to pay them.”

The Prime Minister added that his comments were not limited to any one case, noting that corruption and misuse of public funds have spanned administrations.

  1. I feel like the pm is out of
Touch. Or maybe he thinks because those
Morals worship he on rum shop it feeds into his sense of delusion. But as a supporter of this pm, absolutely no one is buying this tale he is spinning. Get real

  2. It was proven that they were guilty, that the money was stolen IHI….. really? And yet your government knighted these thieves. The word that Come to mind is…..hmmmm

  3. One of the major player of the I H I has been retained as your top ambassador.
You have the country stagnated waiting for another major player to reach a milestone.
The only way one can be deemed guilty is when a competent court finds him/her guilty.
That diatribe coming out of your mouth saying that people are guilty but the court cannot find the so guilty should never come out of the mouth of a grade five student.
Diverting from a public inquiry is a cover up for high level corruption, ineptitude, willful negligence and racketeering.

  4. In the 80’s in St.Vincent I believed it was, a Government official was accused of some how stealing around $40,000. PM James took the matter to court ang the Government got back the money. Issue was that it was a drawn out cade and it costed the Government $90,000, So, $90,000 to get back $40,000.
The people were saying that that was counter productive, and made no sense. Mitchel said yes. It made sense, because the court case cost the defendant also, and he had to send a message to prevent others doing same thing.
I prefer the James Mitchel way

  5. Who or what are you protecting? You waste no time taking people before the courts for what you call deformation, libel and slander, for very frivolous matters but are reluctant to let us know, through the same courts, the status of our business. That should never be your call. You are accusing everyone else of being involved except your wife and yourself so step aside and let the Courts decide. You can’t be an adjudicator while you are a potential witness. This scandal should not end like all the others.

  6. @ Ron,
It was deemed counter productive for the court did not do what thry are supposed to do and tgry do except when the accused or the loosing party (individual) is one of their own. He should have been charged by the judge Ruth paying back the Government’s court cost.
A bunch of little island in the Caribbean Sea as currupted as anyone

  7. But yet didn someone spent whole heap of money to protect themselves an family from an alpha Nero case, can someone make such make sense, they need to do the investigation an see where it falls
