PM Browne Dismisses Lovell’s Odebrecht Defence as “Embarrassing”

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has strongly rebutted a press release issued by former UPP political leader Harold Lovell, dismissing his denials of involvement in the Odebrecht bribery affair as false and contradicted by court filings.

“That is not true. That’s a lie,” Browne said bluntly on Pointe FM, addressing Lovell’s claim that his 2014 legal engagement had no connection to the Brazilian construction firm at the centre of the scandal.

Lovell, in his statement, said he was involved in a civil matter related to the Antigua Overseas Bank (AOB), but Browne argued that the bank was never liquidated. “It’s not even liquidated… the Overseas Bank has an administrator… it is Seaforth.”

The Prime Minister questioned the legitimacy of Lovell’s claims: “A judge would have to order liquidation. A judge would have to appoint him as a liquidator.” He challenged Lovell directly: “Let him provide the evidence that a court appointed him as a liquidator for AOB.”

Browne accused Lovell of issuing a misleading statement to cover what court documents reportedly confirm. “He just embarrassed because in the court documents they said that the Brazilians specifically recruited Franco to fix the problem. And Franco then got on to his two friends—Harold Lovell and Casroy James.”

He went further, highlighting what he described as inconsistencies in Lovell’s own statement. “He also said he met with Franco and the then ambassador Casroy James in Miami.” Browne responded with incredulity: “You see who the friends are—not me and Franco, Harold and Franco.”

“He’s contradicting himself,” the Prime Minister said. “Harold, you’re not a good liar.”

Browne, who has repeatedly denied any involvement in the Odebrecht matter, accused Lovell of trying to rewrite the facts now that court records are surfacing. “So we talk about… he wasn’t a receiver for no bank… the bank still has assets. In fact, there’s about $10 to $15 million worth of land down at Weatherils that the bank still owns.”

Mocking the press release, Browne added: “He may as well just shut up.”

The Odebrecht scandal, which has entangled officials across Latin America and the Caribbean, continues to attract scrutiny, particularly in light of recent legal disclosures.

  1. Misery loves company. The Courts are the deciding factor Gaston not you. Get ready for your deposition in the US Federal Court. If Lovell role in this ODBRECHT requires him to be deposed in any court case(s) he will be. Gaston your explanations regarding the sale of the Alfa Nero are not only embarrassing, they’re demeaning to the intelligence of Antiguans and Barbudans. The Russians are going to drive you crazier.

  2. What does Lovell have to do with the current issue at hand, the Alfa Nero and the court orders?

    This is all irrelevant.

  3. Gaston, I believe everything Lovell has said.
Let us stop the he say, she say.
You have the authority to bring a halt to all doubt.
Other countries have all had arrests and prison sentences imposed on guilty parties.
Please, please, please I beseech you.
Call a Royal Commission of Inquiry into that.
For as long as you refuse to call an inquiry I will see you as the guilty party.
If you are not and have nothing to hide you will do the honorable thing.
Until then you are as guilty as SIN.

  4. I am not a person who followed the ODBBRECHT scandal, but these two politicians keep accusiing each other, if the matter is not yet concluded in the court Gaston is now Prime Minister I would think he has the power to allow the case to go forward and let the people see who is the real liar and put the damn thing to rest once and for all

  6. let us not lose focus,, Alpha Nero is the matter at hand. is anyone paying attention to what the PM said in parliament two days ago? he said the sale was signed off by the port authority boards secretary. check the list of who was paid out from the funds of the sale. The board secretary’s law firm received $300,000usd, over 800,000xcd for legal fees from the sale a clear conflict of interest. how can this be legal? Astaphan also received $96,000usd (expect him to say anything different on the tv?).

  7. Ok me in a trouble with Russian boat, let me pull down someone of credible stature that is a softy to let me look good, Lovell you are a nerd book worm I could beat up on, you not getting down to the antiguan vernacular to be effective you just going yank back in the queens english.

  8. Gaston Browne !! look how long the ball is in your court for you to initiate an enquiry into the Odebrecht Scandal, Eleven (11) Years now, simply because you don’t want to implicate yourself Mr Prime Minister, you buried this issue, and had allowed the Ambassador to give back some form of moneys, to whom ? we never knew, and then fled the Country under your watch..

You need to focus on that very serious matter at hand, which is the Alfa Nero Court Cases and stop your diversion tactics, which is certainly not helping your case at all.

You sounds ridiculous and rather Incipit for far too long now on you Radio Station and if Collin O’Neal really had your interest at heart, he would had quickly initiated a stoppage to this madness, knowing that the whole world is listening to your weekly diatribe.

What’s the reasoning, trying to focus on Harold Lovell at this point, trying your best to change the narrative, which everyone knows, why not deal with this pressing matter at hand, that is drying up the Country’s resources that is coming out of our Treasury on monthly basis, on a matter that I am sure you had known from it’s Inception, was going to have some form of legal backlash for Antigua and Barbuda, you are not that dumb that you didn’t had know.

And getting back to that Odebrecht Scandal, you are implicit in your actions, by allowing this Embassador to returned the funds and them disappeared. It would appear inspite of what you are claiming about Harold Lovell, that you had proven to be an Instigator in all of this.
