PM Browne Promises Appointment of Information Commissioner This Week
Prime Minister Gaston Browne assured Parliament that Anthony Kurt Athill will be formally appointed as the Information Commissioner by the end of the week. Browne made the commitment in response to questions from Opposition MP Richard Lewis, who pressed for answers on delays in the appointment and the establishment of an office for the role.
Browne explained that the delay was procedural and confirmed that Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin provided assurances that the appointment would be completed imminently. “I was just given an assurance by the distinguished Attorney General that the appointment will happen this week,” the Prime Minister stated.
Addressing the office space for the Information Commissioner, Browne identified the former Integrity Commission office at the Francis Building on High Street as the intended location. He added that the government is ready to secure new accommodations if required.
Athill, whose term was set to begin on October 1, 2024, was recommended and approved by the House of Representatives in September. The position is critical for implementing the Freedom of Information Act and bolstering transparency.
The delay has prompted concerns from the opposition, with Lewis emphasizing the importance of timely action to ensure good governance. Browne reaffirmed his government’s commitment to addressing these concerns, pledging swift resolution to the matter.
