PM Browne Projects Greater Political Strength After Turner’s Election Win

St. John’s, Antigua – Prime Minister Gaston Browne has hailed the by-election victory of Rawdon Turner as a decisive boost to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) position in the Lower House. Turner’s resounding 75% vote share in St. Peter, long considered a stronghold for the party, reinforces its political dominance and enhances its majority in Parliament from 9-6 to 10-5.

Describing the victory as “phenomenal,” Browne emphasized the unwavering support of St. Peter’s constituents, who he said have reaffirmed their allegiance to the Labour Party. “This seat has now reemerged as the strongest Labour Party seat,” he remarked. The outcome, according to Browne, underscores the people’s confidence in Turner’s leadership and the party’s vision for national development.

The win strengthens the ABLP’s legislative majority, providing greater room to advance its agenda. Browne noted that the result demonstrates the Labour Party’s resilience and growing support, declaring that the party is now in a position to contest and win any seat.

“I said after the 2023 general elections that Antigua and Barbuda would see a resurgence of the Labour Party and resilience never before seen in our politics. That is precisely what is happening,” he stated.

Political observers are closely watching how the increased majority will shape the party’s approach to governance and elections. Browne hinted at the possibility of an early general election, noting that the party’s strengthened position could capitalize on its current momentum. “The Labour Party is so strong at this time that we could consider an election if the opposition doesn’t get its act together,” he said.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of maintaining the trust of voters, pledging continued efforts to improve infrastructure and address social challenges. He credited the victory to the party’s demonstrated commitment to resolving issues in St. Peter, including infrastructural improvements and social programs.

As the newly appointed Minister for Social and Urban Transformation, Turner’s portfolio aligns with key areas of the government’s focus, including housing, urban renewal, and social welfare. His ability to deliver on these fronts will be pivotal in sustaining voter confidence and furthering the Labour Party’s vision.

Browne expressed high confidence in Turner’s leadership potential, suggesting that the young minister’s performance could secure him a long and successful political career. “St. Peter may have voted for the next prime minister,” he remarked, underscoring Turner’s potential as a rising star within the party.

With economic growth projected to improve in 2025, Browne reiterated the party’s commitment to inclusive development. The by-election win, he said, is both a mandate and an opportunity to strengthen social and economic policies.

“The future of St. Peter and Antigua and Barbuda is well-secured under the Labour Party,” Browne affirmed, highlighting the government’s focus on fostering prosperity for all citizens.
