Browne Praises Shenella Govia’s Appointment as Minister of State in Education Ministry
Prime Minister Gaston Browne lauded Senator Shenella Govia’s promotion to Minister of State in the Ministry of Education during his remarks on Pointe FM’s Browne and Browne show yesterday. He described the move as part of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) strategy for empowering youth and ensuring leadership continuity within the party.
“Congratulations to Senator The Honorable Shenella Govia,” Browne said, highlighting her decade-long journey with the ABLP. He recalled her initial appointment as a senator at the young age of 22 or 23, alongside other youthful leaders such as Maria Browne and Senator Lee Fortune.
Browne emphasized the ABLP’s focus on succession planning, noting, “We are not here to stay forever, and if you’re selfish, you leave the institution vulnerable. My goal is to leave the Labour Party stronger than I inherited it.”
The Prime Minister outlined how the party has consistently invested in young leaders, pointing to the promotions of Michael Joseph to Junior Minister of Health and the upcoming elevation of Lamin Newton. He expressed confidence in Joseph’s potential to secure the Rural West constituency, labeling him “one of the best talents the party has attracted in two decades.”
Additionally, Browne shared plans for integrating young leaders across various boards to prepare them for future leadership roles. He stressed the importance of mentorship from senior members, urging their cooperation in facilitating the transition.
Browne also revealed plans for parliamentary changes, including the transition of House Speaker Gerald Watt to mentor his successor, Osbert Frederick. He described these developments as part of the ABLP’s broader strategy to foster new leadership while maintaining the experience and guidance of senior members.
“The Labour Party’s leadership is evolving,” Browne said. “Our candidates are younger, brighter, and ready to deliver.”
Drawing a sharp contrast, Browne criticized the United Progressive Party (UPP) for lacking a succession plan. He claimed that the UPP’s leadership struggles stem from inadequate planning, citing their challenges in fielding viable candidates.
“Our approach ensures continuity and progress, while theirs leaves them vulnerable,” Browne said.
As the ABLP continues its transition, Browne expressed optimism about the party’s future. He pointed to an upcoming event on December 5, where senior party members like Hugh Marshall and Marin Joseph will reflect on the party’s governance and leadership over the years.
Browne closed his remarks by reiterating the importance of nurturing young leaders while valuing the contributions of seasoned members, ensuring the party remains united and forward-thinking.
