Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, reaffirmed the nation’s longstanding and robust relationship with Canada during talks with the Canadian High Commissioner and a visiting delegation.

Speaking at a formal meeting, PM Browne praised the historical ties between the two nations, which have been nurtured since Antigua and Barbuda gained independence in 1981. He noted Canada’s pivotal role in Antigua’s development, including investments in education, infrastructure, and post-disaster recovery.

“Canada has been one of our most important bilateral partners,” Browne said, noting Canada’s assistance in building schools and Antigua’s VC Bird International Airport. He also expressed gratitude for Canada’s support following Hurricane Irma in 2017, which devastated the sister island of Barbuda.

Browne emphasized the significance of People-to-People exchanges, noting that thousands of Antiguans and Barbudans reside in Canada. He stressed shared priorities, including climate change, UN security reform, human rights, and the reform of international financial systems.

Antigua and Barbuda have consistently backed Canada in international forums. “Our bonds are long-lasting and strong, and Antigua has proven to be a reliable partner in supporting Canada’s candidatures,” Browne said.

The meeting also touched on trade and investment opportunities. The Prime Minister shared details of a recent reception held with the local business community, expressing optimism for enhanced commercial ties between the nations.

The Canadian High Commissioner echoed Browne’s sentiments, commending Antigua and Barbuda’s resilience following natural disasters and its emergence as a luxury tourism destination.

Both parties acknowledged the ongoing challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters in the Caribbean, reiterating the importance of international cooperation in addressing these issues.

Antigua and Barbuda, though no longer eligible for official development assistance due to its middle-income status, continues to benefit from Canada’s Caribbean Regional Development Programming. Recent collaborations include flood mitigation initiatives and training programs for disaster preparedness.

The High Commissioner also noted Canada’s ongoing efforts to bolster regional cooperation through partnerships like the Regional Security System (RSS).

The talks concluded with mutual commitments to deepen bilateral relations and enhance collaboration in key areas of shared interest.
