PM Browne Offers Opposition MPs Scholarships to Pursue University Education
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has extended an offer to members of the Opposition, offering full scholarships for them to attend university and improve their educational qualifications.
Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne highlighted the need for a more competent and educated opposition, arguing that a stronger opposition could contribute to better governance in Antigua and Barbuda.
“We don’t want a bunch of fools as our competitors,” Browne said.
“We want enlightened competitors, because the more educated they are, the more they can perform and push us to do better. The country deserves a strong opposition.”
In an offer framed as being in the national interest, Browne stated that he would provide scholarships to all opposition members who are willing to pursue further education.
“Pringle, Serpent, Pearl—come to my office, and I will give every single one of you a full scholarship. I’ll do so for the benefit of this country,” Browne declared, inviting the MPs to take advantage of Antigua and Barbuda’s educational resources, including the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus.
Browne expressed disappointment in what he described as a lack of effort from the Opposition to develop themselves academically, despite his government’s substantial investments in education.
“We spend $24 million annually on UWI Five Islands, providing opportunities for thousands of Antiguans and Barbudans to develop themselves,” he said. “Yet, these individuals refuse to take advantage of the resources available to them.”
The Prime Minister criticized the performance of certain opposition MPs in Parliament, claiming that their lack of education affects their ability to articulate points effectively.
He noted that this undermines their capacity to represent their constituents or present viable alternatives to government policies.
“This is about ensuring that we have leaders who are equipped to serve the people effectively,” he said.

I would think that CXC ‘s are important for tertiary education I had to have at least 6 subjects with Math and English for College if they decide should they not show the Country their CXC qualifications or GCE what if the don’t have the required entrance requirements and allowed to pursue degree programs is this not Watering Down the UWI standards as suggested by one reputable and scholarly Citizen and so if they don’t meet the entrance requirements this may their very own excuse of turning down the scholarships
Scholarship or no scholarship, education or no education Pearl Quinn reached higher heights in her profession that Gaston Browne. Pearl Quinn didn’t oversee the failure of any bank. I do not know is that’s something to be proud of. Serpent is today running a successful business. It’s competitors are in a distant third place in popularity and listenership. As for Pringle he is not interested in education. Don’t know how he expects to be prime minister. He was advised to take a back seat and go get some letters by one of his advisors. That advise didn’t come from those pulling his strings so he didn’t listen. I think he is a labourite in blue clothes. His mission is to keep the UPP in opposition. His is like a selfish rich kid. If it isn’t him he is destroying everything for everyone.

You atteneded the Antigua State College because I was there when you were there. PM Browne, the normal banking certificate you received from short courses during your banking career.
Mr. Pringle had stood in the classroom and educated our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins for over 13 years, and we never questions his educational background. @Straight Shooter, How can you say that the Pringle is not interested in education? Remember he saw once an educator in our schools teaching for our children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He has to have a level of education to be teaching our children for over 13 years. We need to have Gaston show us his degree(s) documents. For example, Donald Trump doesn’t have a college or university degree, and he is once again, he is the president of the great America.
@UWI6islands, You’re so correct. Gaston Browne has a college diploma/certificates just like Serpent, Pringle, and Pearl. Mr. Pringle was an educator in the school system for over 13 years, teaching our young ones, who are now grown into adulthood. Mr. Pringle gave them that educational foundation they needed to be who they are today. What has Gaston Brown given our young ones during the era Mr. Pringle was an educator other than teaching them to join gangs and terrorizing society?

I mean ever the Vice Chancellor of the UWI Professor Sir Hilary Beckles suggested that he Dr. Browne persue his terminal degree in finance and economics. Gaston Browne in his early years in government had developed a new concept that caught many economists eyes and ears. He called it Entrepreneurial Socialism. However the USA and others didn’t really like the name Socialism in there and therefore Browne dropped this concept. Now he is following through with the concept State Owned Entrepreneurship. Like what he does with NAMCO and State Insurance Company Ltd and WIOC. Earning None Tax Dollars for the the Treasury. This allows the government other avenues of getting revenues other then through taxes. Which in fact will not burden the people.
But the haters have no vision and no clue of all these concepts. And they asking stupid questions, which with a simple Google search one can get the answers.

Papa Bird may not have had high education and recognized his shortcoming when going on the world stage. That is why he educated his sons and therefore he entrusted Lester to do all his international meetings and dealings for him. Even going to the UN to present his speech.
In the 21st century it is just not acceptable to have our politicians not educated at atleast tertiary education. They would embarres us on the international arena. The UPP has slapped us in the face by presenting us with these loosers and laggards and they want to justify that by telling us our Father of the Nation and his colleagues were not educated either. But they forget to mention that was in those days. Every parents since then has spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to educate their children. Were it only to get out of poverty.
