PM Browne Commends Speaker Osbert Frederick for Exceptional Patience Amid Opposition Disruption
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has commended Speaker of the House Osbert Frederick for demonstrating exceptional patience during a disruption in Parliament on Wednesday.
The disturbance, caused by opposition MPs Trevor Walker and Algernon “Serpent” Watts, lasted over an hour as they argued over the speaking order.
Browne described the conduct as unprecedented, noting, “This kind of behavior in the House is something we’ve never seen before.” Despite the disruption, Speaker Frederick chose not to escalate the situation, a decision the Prime Minister acknowledged as a display of remarkable tolerance.
“The Speaker had the right to call on the Sergeant-at-Arms to remove them. I’ve never seen this level of tolerance by any Speaker. Ordinarily, they’d not only be removed but also suspended,” Browne stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of maintaining order in Parliament and criticized the opposition’s approach during the session.
He stressed that Parliament is a forum for constructive debate and expressed concern over the time wasted on what he called “blustering” by opposition members.

It like Parliament also now belong to the PM. He is dictating who should not speak and who should. No matter how he tries to spin it, Parliament is the latest of our institutions that he has destroyed.
Amendment to story: “So called filibustering; not blustering.
From st.Vincent to antigua the world is really out of control
The speaker literally had no clue what time do and keep looking over to the PM, as if he was in fear of spanking from the PM for not doing what he want. So he was trying to not show bias but what he wanted to do, he knew was bias/partial. That is the body language I read.
The PM seem to be so powerful over these people.
You UPP people just sick my stomach now The speaker had too much tolerance. He should have done what he did sooner.
They cannot hold a good debate, so they used noice by force.
Is this really what Antigua comes to ? Is this kind of nonsense you all like ?
In the history of Antigua parliament, has there ever been a time when a card carrying member of a party, who speaks regularly at their public meetings appointed speaker of the house?
Let’s hope that he can remember when he sits in the high chair, he is not there to represent or defend his party, but to be impartial and stick to the standing order.
