Prime Minister Gaston Browne has pointed to a 20% drop in crime and violence as a sign of progress, telling worshippers at the March of Witness that the nation must give thanks while continuing to work together for lasting peace.

Speaking during Thursday’s observance of the National Day of Prayer, Browne recalled last year’s surge in violent crime which, he said, had forced the country to unite in response.

This year’s reduction, he added, was evidence that faith, solidarity, and collective action were making a difference.

“Even the issue of crime and violence, which would have literally caused us to come together as a nation last year when we saw an escalation, I am pleased to report to you that already we have seen a 20% reduction. God is good,” the Prime Minister said to applause.

Browne urged citizens to see thanksgiving as central to national life. He praised church leaders for their prayers over parliamentarians, young people, and communities, while noting that Antigua and Barbuda had “made progress literally in every single sector.”

The Prime Minister described the National Day of Prayer as “quintessential” to the country’s development, encouraging citizens to approach it with the same enthusiasm as Carnival and other cultural celebrations. He promised that “next year will be bigger and better,” inviting everyone to be part of the observance.

Addressing the nation’s political divisions, Browne acknowledged differences in persuasion but stressed the importance of working together.

“We will always have differences. We will always have different political persuasions,” he said. “But at the same time, we must always come together to give thanks and at the same time to work collectively for the advancement of our nation and its people.”

Browne closed his remarks with words of gratitude and encouragement. “Once again, I say to you, thank you very much. And again, give thanks and praise. Much love and blessings,” he told the gathering.

The March of Witness, held on 11 September, brought together clergy, government officials, and community leaders for a day of worship, reflection, and national thanksgiving.
