Prime Minister Gaston Browne has paid a glowing tribute former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer saying that he has plans to engage him in the development of the country.

The country’s leader between 2004-2014, Spencer bid farewell to active politics today after serving more than 30 years in the Parliament of Antigua & Barbuda.

Browne says it is his intention to bring a special act before parliament to cater to former prime ministers.

“I am sure that at some point we will further celebrate your contribution. I am also of the view that we may have to come back to parliament to have a special act befitting for a retired prime minister,” Browne told the Lower House.

He said the measure will “make sure that he enjoys certain services and privileges. I have already given instructions to the Attorney General to make sure that those arrangements are put in place. We know that you are not a man of vanity but as a former prime minister, it is important that you now transition into a statesman.”

The prime minister also told his colleague that there is a role for him and former prime minister Sir Lester Bird “to better advance our democracy.”

He said matters of electoral reform and good governance are areas where the two leaders should be able to advise the government on.

“And to help us to make sustaining decisions in the interest of Antigua and Barbuda.”

In paying tribute to Spencer, Browne thanked the leader of the opposition for his service to the country calling him “a man of humility who has served the people well.”

The prime minister recalled Spencer’s activism and involvement in the Gray’s Farm community.

He said they have always admired each other.

“There are few individuals who would have given that level of service and done so selflessly,” Browne said.

Spencer said goodbye in parliament in anticipation of “imminent” general elections expected to be announced this weekend during an ABLP campaign event.

  1. well after u loose the election lol u making a bad decision to call an early election continue to study Peter ,the country is in a mess ….the dna party need to call it quits it is a waste of time and support the opposition upp they must work together to out this dictator another thing is Harold need to be the deputy and let someone else lead it seems that the party is suffering because most don’t want him as the party head. …we the people need to let these politicians see who is boss,in a couple weeks you will see who coming to you for a job interview. ..

    • Referring to the actual topic up above Baldwin Spencer has a very big heart and deserves everything the PM is gonna put in place for him because it really wasn’t entirely his fault for the flaws during his time as PM it was ppl like the new leader of the UPP who was pulling the strings all along…

  2. UPP supporters fell asleep from 2004 – 2014 and woke up when ABLP won so they never got to witness the mess their party made..Well atleast that’s what it seems like to me

  3. I just can’t understand the pm is going to call a early election and all the road in the country is in a mess only road that get all the priority is the one that point fm is on come on my pm we all pay tax.stop playing politics but most of us don’t look to the future

    • Put back the UPP and watch nothing being done once again….I want something better than Gaston and the ABLP and so far I just can’t see any…. both parties have their flaws and both parties have their positive contributions but if u have a blue Lego block and a red Lego block of same shape and size tell me what is different besides the color???

  4. And John dow that’s Antiguan politricks when elections they make more efforts to impress…..plus the road won’t last very long cause they don’t build roads the proper way in this country….jus stone, tar, asphalt and roll till rain and two heavy machine wear it down and warp it and how could I forget the rusty pipes that we remembered needs to be replaced after the road has been built….happened under the UPP and is and will continue to happen under this government…

      • Robocar u just list a valid point that will have been a major contributing factor to the poor road works in this country and ur telling me to not be negative LMAO!!!!

  5. what you really saying? The upp was booted to give ablp the reins as they promised to be better stewards of the people affairs. they have failed miserably and your warped mind is telling us to continue with this messed up crew? Man the world is beautiful it’s your mind that’s messed up. Fool?

  6. Gaston managed to convince this country that he wasn’t a part of the corruption that was the Alp and he deserved a chance to lead a new administration ABLP that will be fresh and different… we see what happened… I think Lovell or Joanne deserve to be given the same opportunity, they both seem the lesser of the evil that we have experienced over the past 4 years!!! We need to punish failure by firing until we get it right!!!
