PM Browne: Government Will Assist Senator Alex Browne Amid Speculation About His Health

St. John’s, Antigua – Prime Minister Gaston Browne has addressed concerns surrounding Opposition Senator Alex Browne’s health, confirming that his administration is prepared to assist if needed.

Speaking on Pointe FM on Saturday, Browne acknowledged reports that Senator Browne is seeking medical treatment abroad, specifically in Colombia. He emphasized that the government routinely provides assistance to Antiguans and Barbudans facing serious health challenges and assured that Senator Browne would not be excluded from such support.

“If it is that Senator Browne requires assistance from the government, I can assure you that it will certainly be forthcoming,” Browne stated.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid speculation regarding Browne’s financial difficulties in securing medical care.

During the radio segment, it was mentioned that Senator Browne has reportedly struggled to cover medical expenses, raising concerns about his ability to fund necessary treatment.

Browne also used the opportunity to urge members of the United Progressive Party (UPP) to support their colleague, questioning why the opposition has not provided assistance.

He called on UPP Leader Jamale Pringle and other party members to contribute to Browne’s medical costs, suggesting that they organize a telethon or fundraising effort.

“We need to have a telethon,” Browne suggested.

The discussion also touched on past instances where opposition figures allegedly speculated about the declining health of senior government officials, including Sir Robin Yearwood. Browne criticized what he described as the “politicization of illness” and underscored the unpredictability of life.

While it was claimed during the discussion that the government had already contributed $3,000 towards Senator Browne’s medical costs, the Prime Minister stated he was not aware of such assistance but reiterated that the administration remains willing to help if needed.

Senator Browne has not publicly commented on his medical condition or the financial challenges he may be facing.

  1. So here we go again with PM Brown playing politics with the UPP. I don’t know Mr. Brown’s ailments and why he has to seek treatment in Columbia. It tells me as a medical professional that the services Mr. Browne is seeking is obviously not available at SLMBC. How long has it been since the the PM ALP Government is in control of healthcare? Long enough to have a Cancer Center. Long enough to have access to a Cardiologist, Neurosurgeon, and other Specialists. How dare PM Browne is playing healthcare politics Opposition members? His Administration must work to improve Healthcare at SLMBC so that citizens don’t have to go abroad. Short Shirt reminded us that the stick hitting the wild goat is the same thing stick hitting the tame. Get my profession out of the political circus, and put it at SLMBC and the Clinics to serve the citizens.

  2. PM Browne I have a few questions. Before I do i want to remind the public that former education minister Michael Browne used a private flight from Antigua to Bermuda to deal with a chest pain and then to America where his condition was deemed trivial.
    1) On what account was he able to have such services?
    2) Was it as a result of his ministerial or parliamentary status?
    3) Does parliament mean only the lower house?
    4) is there parliamentary medical privilege for government side of parliament only or for all parliamentarians?
    5) If the senate is also a part of the parliament isn’t Alex Browne a part of parliament?
    6) Is he covered under the parliamentary medical insurance privilege?
    7) If he is entitled to such parliamentary medical privilege why should he have to approach a particular minister?
    8) Is there a prescribed procedure for parliamentarians in order to access such privilege?
    9) What is the delay in assisting Senator Alex Browne and ensuring that that help is timely?
PM Browne ss you can see i am good at debating. I have an encyclopedia of questions. However I chose to stop here. Stop playing games with the man’s health because you hold the purse string.
Lest you be reminded of a statement made by a former Jamaican prime minister and repeated here in Antigua by Hugh Madshall, do not condone things in government that you will regret in opposition.

  3. Mr PM, this is shameful and an all time low. You could have simply said “Government will support Sen Alex Browne, like it does any other citizen”, and that’s it. To be going for cheap political points on the heals of someone’s health crisis….I can’t tell you how distasteful this is.

  4. The article clearly stated: “(Gaston)Browne criticized what he described as the “politicization of illness” and underscored the unpredictability of life.”

Here follows my response to the questions raised.

Senator’s are not covered by the insurance policy for Ministers and elected parliamentarians.

Our government will assist him, as we have done for others and if necessary, and I will contribute to any fundraising efforts.

There is no politics being played here; it’s about our common humanity and empathy for each other as Antiguans & Barbudans, irrespective of our political persuasion.

    Blessings,

    Blessings.

  5. Quite correct. There should not be any politicization or gloating of any ones illness whether politicians or ordinary citizens. Life is quite fleeting and we are all subject to its vicissitudes.

  6. Is the senator another victim of the mЯИⱯ bioweapon? Sadly, for those affected, not even the helpful, once over the counter, cheap, off label drugs are readily available in Antigua. Why didn’t public health in ANU take into consideration the possibility of any long term negative effects from the experimental product they foisted on the people? There is no off switch on how long the body will continue to make spike protein antibodies. And, because immune systems were primed to making antibodies against the original virus, these antibodies aren’t binding to the never ending variants leading to all kinds of maladies.

  7. This man Gaston speak firmly of he helping Alex when he is really just saying he will hold back his bad mindedness as each political party have against each other and allow the people tax money to fairly contribute to the citizenry financial and health crisis. And he won’t try put obstacle in the way but is hoping to publicly exploit Alex situation which will be his talk to come.
