Prime Minister Gaston Browne has defended his administration’s development efforts in Barbuda, despite ongoing legal challenges and criticism from the Barbuda Council.
At the opening of the Barbuda International Airport, Browne addressed accusations that the development was unsustainable and lacked proper consultation with the local council.
“The airport project has faced baseless opposition and frivolous lawsuits,” Browne said. “These legal challenges only serve to waste resources that could be used for further development.”
Browne noted that his government has always engaged in consultations and had made every effort to address concerns. However, he stressed that when cooperation was not forthcoming, his administration would continue to push forward with development in Barbuda to ensure the island’s prosperity.
Prime Minister Browne laid out a bold vision for Barbuda, positioning the island as a future economic powerhouse capable of generating significant revenues independently. Speaking at the opening of the Barbuda International Airport, Browne said that with the right investments, Barbuda could soon become a net contributor to the state treasury, moving away from reliance on Antigua.
“We want Barbuda to be self-sufficient, and this airport is key to unlocking that potential,” Browne said. “I believe within the next five years, Barbuda could be generating $100 million annually in taxes.”
Browne’s vision includes attracting luxury tourism and high-end real estate investments, which he believes will boost Barbuda’s economy, provide job opportunities for residents, and elevate their quality of life.

We still don’t have Water, the infrastructure is dilapidated, teachers and nurses are leaving, we have a colonial salary structure, a non-expedicious health care system, inflation rampant etc.
It is really bad!
Increase in water supply, exellent infrastructure, retention of nurses and teachers, improve salary structure, exellent healthcare system, and controllable inflation can only be achieve through an improve tax regimen where the population contribute through the payment of income tax, higher utility payments, higher property tax and an increase of customs tariffs. Are you willing to pay?
