Prime Minister Gaston Browne has accused opposition figures and diaspora activists of mounting a smear campaign against Antigua and Barbuda.
His remarks followed a protest by a small group of nationals outside a Washington, D.C. venue where he met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other Caribbean leaders.
Browne alleged that senior United Progressive Party (UPP) members were collaborating with “foreign mercenaries” to damage the country’s image and destabilise his government.
Central to the protest were allegations surrounding the US$40 million sale of the luxury yacht Alfa Nero.
The Prime Minister rejected claims that US$10 million was unaccounted for, stating the full amount was received and documented by the Ministry of Finance.
He cited a sworn affidavit from the buyer to support the figure.
The demonstrators also raised concerns about Antigua and Barbuda’s foreign policy, alleging ties to China, Cuba and Venezuela. Browne accused them of attempting to mislead US authorities and described their actions as harmful to national interests.
He further claimed the group, supported by a mobile electronic billboard, was spreading misinformation with backing from the UPP and hinted at possible links to Russian funding.
“These individuals should be condemned by all who care about the truth and the nation’s well-being,” he said.

I get why the diaspora is upset, but protesting in another country is counterproductive.
Well when Antiguans are free outside the ambit of a repressive black government they are elated to utilize that freedom of expression, anybody in antigua talk they are threatened with law suits and cursed on the prime ministers radio station about their bank savings and health records, if only the hon. Prime minister Gaston brown take a leaf from the hon.prime minister Baldwin Spencer book and say “talk as you like” there would not have been so much suspicion. Antiguan diaspora are more developed outside of Antigua government system that continue from the British colonial devolved to the black neocolinial government that continue to keep our people poor and semiliterate like the days england ruled.
Disagreements like this should be handled at home, not on foreign soil.

What a man can look sympathy!!!! Nobody in Antigua was aware of the protest. The people only knew because he ran his mouth. What a man!!
The part that I know is true is the part that ABLP is aligned with China. Look at all his speeches, everyone of them supports china and condemns USA.
Also his statement that folks are protesting against him is damaging the country, please let him, PM Browne, know he is NOT the country. He is not a king and his children are not princes and princesses.
I am so proud of those people for speaking up about what they feel, wherever and whenever they can. They told the slaves you can not protest slavery on Sundays or near church. This is what they do to take away your rights, they tell you when you are not allowed to protest for your freedom, benefits and rights. Do it wherever you can. They are using this tactics of telling you when you can not stand up for justice and accountability in hope they can completely stop you from protecting your rights.
