Prime Minister Gaston Browne has celebrated a proud family milestone after his daughter, Britney Browne, graduated with a Master’s Degree in International Business from Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom.
The Prime Minister travelled to the UK to attend the graduation ceremony, describing the occasion as one of the proudest moments of his life.
Speaking to Antigua.news, Browne praised his daughter’s dedication and said her success reflected years of hard work and perseverance. He also reiterated his belief that education is the most valuable investment for both families and nations.
The Prime Minister highlighted his administration’s continued investment in higher education, pointing to the expansion of the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus as part of efforts to increase opportunities for young Antiguans and Barbudans.
Browne said he hopes Britney’s achievement will encourage other young people to pursue higher education and strive for excellence. He added that, despite the demands of public office, attending his daughter’s graduation was a special moment that underscored the importance of family.

I too will join the line in congratulating the young Britney Browne on her achievement and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. It pleases my heart to see our young children do exceptionally well. All that I hope for is that there is space for them to contribute their talents to the country of their birth. Too many of our young people remain abroad and contribute their God given talent to the developed world, while we here remain deprived of their talents. Sometime you want to justify it, but other times you must agree that if their is no end to this trend when will we ever become a develop country and keep our young people at home. With all the social consequences of having parents live lonely lives. Having to travel abroad in order to see their children and grand children. I know of friends who could not take it after a while and migrated in their latter years spending those days in the cold. This Brain Drain has to stop. Especially now that we have our own university I hope it will.
But excuse me if I want to give some criticism as well. I know these are proud moments for parents and it should. Because Parents are the only one that wishes their children the best. I mean all the best. Parents if they can would sacrifice their last dime for the development of their children. And they always want their children to be even better then them. But lets not close our eyes to many of these broken families. Families where the father is missing in the home. Where the father haven’t even donated a dime to the child’s education. Yet when the child is being successful they want to take part in the celebration. The Prime Minister’s father was such a father. The Prime Minister has with this marriage shown to be a great rule model, however his life before he got married to Maria was a typical Antiguan Black Man model. Having children with many different women. I mean don’t they know they need to use a condom in order to prevent fathering all these children. The PM himself has don well to look after his children, but not every man is that thoughtful and that responsible. Or even has the means to do so. Antigua and Barbuda has too many fathers missing in homes leaving our women to be father and mother and causing many to live in poverty and extreme financial conditions. The penalties on the books these days are not sufficient, but that is not my biggest issue. My issue is when will we train our men to be more responsible. Should it be a crime if someone fathers a child and don’t take responsibility. And should this burden stop with the man or should the parents of the man also take responsibility. Men are getting of too easy with this. In fact many men see this as having bragging rights when they have all these children with many different women. And when these children have anti-social behavior we complain. I think the state should hold man especially financially accountable and let it hurt them in the wallet. So bad that they will not do it a second time. And any other man will be discourage of having sex without taking precaution. Condoms can be had free at this time because of Carnival. MBS has boxes full for free at their dispensaries. But some men think is not man enough if you use a condom. And fellows do not be fooled by a woman in the heat of the moment. You will regret this later in life. Lets build a society where a model household is that of a Nuclear Family. And let especially our Political Leaders be a model to our young children. I pray to God that this be instilled into our young children and sometimes I don’t mind if we go back to the times when having a child out of wedlock was taboo. Because these days our young mothers are getting younger and younger and have no shame, getting pregnant almost every year from another men.
Thank God the PM took care of his responsibilities.

@Less We Forget. All excellent points. But, this issue is not limited to Antiguan men. The women must also be held accountable unless she was raped. 70% of black Americans are born into single parent families. In fact, in America right now, 20% of mothers have multiple birth fathers. And out of that 20%, 28% of them have at least 2 birth fathers. Let that sink in. As you indicated we as a people need to do better. I’m not even sure how we’d start to fix this problem though.

I usually do not directly comment on what others say about me. I just voice my thoughts about the article. But I’m glad you understood where I’m coming from. Social issues should not be politicized. As a people we need to start the conversation. I am guilty as well with one child out of wedlock. I can blame it on being a unresponsible youth that wasn’t ready to be a father. But I have spoken to my boys not to do the same. However I have to give thanks to my late mother who stepped in where I dropped the ball. I know many mothers who did the same. And kudos to those mothers who understood the mistake their sons made and corrected that. Question is, should all parents be held accountable for the mistakes of their sons? I mean if you have a daughter would you want her to be a single mother at a very young age, while the father of her child is running around making more babies as if he is a sex machine? No responsibilities whatsoever.
