PM Browne Calls On Employers To Support Their Non-Working Staff

Prime Minister Gaston Browne

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is imploring businesses to support non-working staff, however attorney-at-law Charlesworth Tabor opposes Browne saying that there are risks involved

Browne explains that businesses that are able to support their employees to continue doing so during this trying period.

On the other hand, Tabor says employers cannot be forced to make payments to employees who are not working, even during this time of crisis.

While admitting that there is no legal basis for businesses to do this, Browne says it would be the humanitarian thing to support others in need.

Tabor rebutted that businesses will be taking a huge financial risk by paying employees when the company is not making money.

  1. Good idea. It’s the right thing to do. That money paid out for salary, will be returned to the businesses 10 folds. God bless and stay safe everyone.

  2. Charlesworth Tabor’s comments reflect a person who is so opposed to anything and everything that PM Gaston Browne says that he cannot find common ground to agree. There is nothing in the PM’s statement that suggests that any business has a legal responsibility to pay workers who are not working. Instead, the article explains, “While admitting that there is no legal basis for business to do this, Browne says it would be the HUMANITARIAN thing to support others in need.” The article also asserts that the PM is encouraging “business that ARE ABLE” to assist. Geesh, what is contentious about such an assertion?

Mr. Tabor, please begin to act like a mature individual and stop stooping to the level of someone who is without a good sense of moral responsibility. There are people in society who still hold you in high esteem. Don’t give them a reason to see you in the same light as those who clutch at straws simply in a quest to discredit another. There is no shame in agreeing with an enemy if and when they say something sensible.

    • Charlesworth Tabor is one of the most wicked and vile human beings. 4 years ago he knock down a special needs child and used his links in the legal world to escape the chages. Karma is coming for him real soon .

      • I think that the government should introduced the unemployment tax which will be paid by the employers. There are a lot of people in Antigua and Barbuda that earn between a salary of $250 to $500 per week. With this epidemic coronavirus upon us, a lot of employees will be struggling to keep foods on their tables. Cost of living in the country is very high that it have absorbed these small earnings bracket. It is not hard when you have hungry children looking up on you and you don’t have it to give them. A lot of employment were shutdown or lockdown before the government declared the 7 days lockdown.

      • Karma is a …. You have it all wrong. A child ran into my vehicle running after his pet goat. I was arrested by the police and charged. The matter went to court and was dismissed. The police knew from the outset that it was an unfortunate accident and the young child was wrong. But you know because of politics they were trying their best to persecute me not prosecute. I hope in the future you will get all your facts right.

        • Charlesworth Tabor you may escape the law of man but u will not escape God’s law an unseen eye see all. Karma is real and you will reaping yours.

    • How about suggesting to the PM and his cohorts to give up their salaries for 3 months and cancel the absolutely ludicrous 2 term full salaries for ex politicians…if it has to remain then it should be no less than 4 terms! None of the politicians are short of money and numerous of them have (created) other incomes from heavy duty equipment and garbage removal etc. They have absolutely NO living expenses besides perhaps actually buying a chocolate bar or similar, so they can more than afford to put into effect their favorite speeches about being a “caring government” and actually do something HUMANITARIAN for the people they profess to care so much about. Besides the way too overcrowded civil service sector maintaining these politicians past and present goes a long way towards financially crippling the country. Are the red minions so senseless that they are happy to literally suffer in silence without incomes in their homes while all the politicians continue to maintain the freebies and un-needed salaries??

  3. “Prime Minister is imploring businesses”……”.Attorney says employers cannot be forced” where in the PM’s statement is he forcing employers to do anything? And some people are considered attorneys!

    • On a point of clarification on, Minister Melford Nicholas appeared on television with Mr. Burfold of ABS TV, someone said to me that he made a statement saying that Employers were obligated to pay their employees during the closure of their business as a result of the covid-19 crisis. That is the statement I was reacting to when I said that employers have no legal obligation to pay their employees. The Prime Minister subsequently ask employers who could assist their employees in this period of crisis to do so. I even went further to point out that an employer is only legally obligated to pay an employee (under the Disaster Management Act, 2002), if one of his employees is called out to work (lets say by NODS) during the crisis to assist in some kind of national exercise. My opinion on the matter was incorrectly put in the media. I understand as a result that I am being crucified on social media, with some going as far to say that I am a Dominican and Dominican are selfish. For the record I am a born Antigua. My birth place is Maloney Street, Ottos and my family house is still there. I hope this clarification puts the misunderstanding of my opinion to rest.

      • So Charlesworth Tabor you made those comments from “hear say”. Mr Tabor with all due respect to you sir you are acting like a politically blind damn dunce and you call yourself a lawyer. I won’t even hire you to represent my dog.

      • Mr Tabor, you don’t have to reply to the PM every time he makes a statement or suggestion. Making insensitive statements base on hearsay make you sound unprofessional. Behave like a lawyer and not a dunce politician.

      • @ CHARLESWORTH TABOR

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT YOU MADE SUCH PROFOUND STATEMENT OFF of ” HEAR SAY “. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN YOU. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER. THIS IS YOUR FRIEND ” ALL AROUND”

        • ALL AROUND:
When Gaston Browne went after the Manager of Scotia Bank based on hear say. What did you say then? Where the heck was your voice. It was okay because ‘Hear Say” is applied to all others except Gaston Browne. You are so one sided. Why you all do not kiss his ring.

  4. This is what I was waiting to hear from our PM and I’m a 💯 with this . Listen to our PM employers,

  5. Charlesworth Tabor … Persons are dying all over the world and listened to Tabor talking about CONSTITUTION. Charlesworth Tabor and His Damani Tabor are totally against Antigua and Antiguans. I heard He is from Dominica. These People DO NOT have interests in Antiguans / Barbudans. Stop talking about CONSTITUTION and follow the procedure outlined by the Government . Shame on the TABORS.

    • I always heard that most Dominicans are selfish (badminded) people and they’re about themselves.

  6. I always heard that most Dominicans are selfish (badminded) people and they’re about themselves and self alone.

  7. Charlesworth Tabor where in God’s name is the humanity in you. This is not the time to be playing politics and talking about the damn consitution. This is a deadly ever changing virus that has its paws on the whole world. My God you are a lawyer so your family are well off but there are some people who from no fault of them, their employers or the government lost their jib and don’t know what their furtue holds. There is a very special place in hell for you Charlesworth Tabor.

  8. Oh gosh give Mr Tabor a break. All over the world govt assisting persons who are out of work due to the caronavirus. USA is sending $1200 to citizens. We cant print monies like the US so let me stay close to home St Kitts is assissting persons out of work during this time.

Some employers on island still paying their workers. It seems to me that persons are absolving our best and brightest PM from the number one economy which grew faster than USA UK and all the rest for not being able to give the citizens any relief. In a small economy such as ours a thousand million from CIP should have placed us in a better financial position. But typical Labour party when they in govt the line item “corruption” in their budget always prohibit them from governing properly.
