Prime Minister Gaston Browne has emphasized the importance of a capable opposition in promoting good governance, addressing the current challenges faced by the opposition party in Antigua and Barbuda.
Browne remarked, “A robust opposition challenges the government on performance and accountability, not through insults but through well-argued policy positions.” He expressed disappointment at the state of the opposition, noting their struggles to field a candidate for the upcoming by-election in St. Peter. “It is incomprehensible that the main opposition party could have found itself in a position in which it did not position anyone,” Browne said.
Referring to governance and accountability, Browne stated, “If you have a strong opposition, and it is about your competing on performance, you have to perform well, failing which you’ll be deposed.” He added, “Governance is about performance, and strong opposition helps to support good governance.”
Browne also criticized the opposition’s lack of preparedness and strategy. “They were on this fallacy that Asot Michael was a UPP supporter and the seat was a UPP seat, so they made no investment,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the role of opposition in democracy, Browne concluded, “We want to have an opposition that has competence, that can organize itself properly.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the nation prepares for a by-election in the St. Peter constituency, highlighting the significance of having an effective and organized opposition to strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s political landscape.

These Guys want to run Antigua…HELL NO WAY.
How can a dictator want any opposition, let alone a strong one! He has already shot down any intention of a convention and his followers are so very weak that whenever he contradicts himself, they seem not to be aware. Such a simpleton and a bluff.
Wow wow wow I am at a lost to hear the PM spoke about accountability in his governance it is not the role of the opposition it is the role of those who are elected to give an account of how our money is spent let us look at the Namco, chapa no account is it we the people should be standing up in the past it would not have happened you and malwyn was blocked from entering your office it is going to happen again Law enforcement a few years ago tragedy strikes on boarder security two senior customer officers one was killed and the other was disabled as a responsible government we had no proper investigation into these crimes I thought that you would have asked the British government for some assistant what I gather is an arrest is made and that’s the end for me looking on it needs more than that again yes not the opposition we the people I’m I to buying into the killing of the parliamentary rep for St Peters we were told that Scott land yard will be coming to assist yes and arrest have been made that is the end of the story I thought that other cases would have been bought to light I don’t think that you want them to enter the front door
