Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government intends to cut down Rat Island, located off the coast of St. John’s Harbour, to support future development and beautification projects.
Speaking on the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM, Browne said the small offshore island will be reshaped or leveled, with the material likely to be reused for land reclamation or other construction purposes.
“We’re going to cut down Rat Island,” Browne said. “We can use that material elsewhere — perhaps for reclamation or development purposes.”

The prime minister said the initiative forms part of a broader vision to modernize and enhance the country’s waterfront areas, especially as Antigua and Barbuda continues to expand its cruise tourism and port infrastructure through the Global Ports Holding partnership.
Browne said the transformation of the St. John’s Harbour area is key to creating what he described as a “modern, world-class capital,” capable of attracting both visitors and investors.
The proposed works would complement other coastal and urban improvement efforts underway, including new land-based facilities at the cruise port and ongoing city beautification initiatives.
“We are making progress in every aspect of our development,” Browne said. “Projects like this are about modernization, presentation, and pride in our capital city.”

My mother’s birth place. Such a historical destruction in the name of progress…the price of progress is really high….the silence is so deafening in this country….
Hopefully our Prime Minister will call on the marvellous ecological team that did such an amazing transformation on the small island of Redondo. It makes sense!
How they didn’t get worldwide recognition for revitalising and restoring this beautiful and natural habitat is beyond many of us.
Redondo was a real rat 🐀🐀 🐀 infested mess for decades – if not more.
Is rat island and offshore island or part of the actual harbour? Anyway I do agree with the Prime Minister in cutting it down and creating expansion for the harbor.
The current hill “Rat Island”, have a very unattractive look and need to go to create more space for the harbour.

As most of you know, this Rat Island isn’t actually an island but a small hill at the end of Deepwater Harbour between the distillery and the coast guard station. It is no more than 20 acres in size. With the coast guard station eventually going to be relocated to Camp Blizzard, doing something with that hill frees up additional space for the Port Authority or whoever to use. It used to be a fort and a leper colony way back when.
Has there been any consultation with the Environment Division, and independent ecological agencies about any environmental impacts? How about historical issues?
I’m all for development, but it must be sustainable. Let not put the cart before the horse, and lets move forward the correct way
When he hosts his reality show on Saturdays, his cabinet, his the entire administration and the public hear of his plans all at the same time. This is one of the attributes of a dictator. He once stated that whatever he says on his Radio Station is law. It’s clear that ABS is his propaganda machine from Sunday through Friday.
It was just a simple hill used by workers to further assist them in the construction of the original Deep water harbor back in the day. I remembered my elder brother was part of that crew and that’s where the offices and the big shots chilled.
